Has anyone tried to drill their own well for pond water? An Alabama company, I think it is called Deeprock, offers do-it-yourself drilling equipment at what seems like a reasonable price, especially if you could "share" the equipment among a group of folks. Anyone tried that and willing to share their experience?

Make sure to research state law. For example, in Montana, you have to have "water rights" in order to drill a well, and it can be a lengthy process. In Oklahoma, you have to have a license to drill a well. In a lot of cases, I would think that if you "goof" something up and contaminate the groundwater source, you could be in for a heap of trouble.

i know 2 people who have done this,both have dug shallow wells down to about 40'.i was thinking about this this past year but decided if i get a well i would like to go deeper than these guys i know.i'm not sure about water at this depth,they tell me it's ok for water in a pond but not willing to try until i know more about this.the wells around here that people drink from seem to be around 300'.

I drilled a well horizontally using a water powered drill rig I rented. The reason was to tap into a spring on the other side of a road which is untapped and flows to a roadside gully. The property has a 30 degree slope so I set up and bored into the hill 200 feet and the result is clear running water flowing at 3 gpm even in the summer. I didn't even get close to the actual spring but I apparently provided a vent in the existing saturated sub soil enough to give me the flow I have.
