Hello all,

I recently purchased a piece of property that has a about 1 acre pond that is supposed to be 12/14/18 feet deep depending on who you ask. So I've tried o fish it and got absolutely no hits. there are frogs jumping in when I approach the bank and will come out of the water back in as i stand there. There is a green layer on top the pond which when touched in between the fingers feels slightly grainy. I'm assuming the pond is oxygen choked. Any thoughts on the best way to recover this pond? Thanks

First thing I would suggest is get out on the water and find out just how deep it is. An old fashioned depthfinder made out of mason string, marked in 6" increments with some kind of weight on the end should work, or just use a tape measure. Does it have any vegetation in it at all? The grainy stuff sounds like either mill or duck weed. (Can't be sure without a picture).Either can be removed with some elbow grease and a pool skimmer net. Some cheap pool noodles with a small rope ran through them to stretch across the pond and slowly pull it all to one end will concentrate it to one area. Just make sure it doesn't get washed back in. Do you see anything swimming, breaking the surface, waking, bubbles rising from below, etc.? If your not opposed to chemical treatments without regard to anything living in it, you could just spray it all and start from scratch with the fish you want.

Just my 2 cents. I'm just starting out too.

.10 surface acre pond, 10.5 foot deep. SW LA. The epitome of a mutt pond. BG, LMB, GSF, RES, BH, Warmouth, Longear Sunfish, Gambusia,Mud Minnows, Crappie, and now shiners!!...I subscribe!!
