Was down at my pond yesterday and noticed when the feeder went off, some of the food was pulverized. There is a mix of Purina GFC and Optimal bluegill in it. It is the 70lb TH feeder. I ran a test run afterwards and it was the same thing. Maybe just some bottom of the bag dust??

I would suspect "bottom of the bag dust", but I would not exclude bugs as a possibility.

Hadn't thought about bugs. I guess that's probably something you just have to deal with. Thanks Noel. BTW, where abouts are you at in West Central MO. My pond is in East Central KS about 20-25 minutes West of Hume, MO if you know where that is.

Bag dust is common and the action of the feeder in dispensing food adds to the dust. Not a problem.

mbj, I live pretty close to Sedalia, MO. At least it's the closest town with some recognition.
I mentioned bugs as a possibility, but it would be unlikely if the feed is fairly fresh. Most bug problems that I have encountered were with dog, bird, and farm animal feeds that were a season too old.

Yep I had a bunch of bags with worms because they set around too long in the heat. A nasty mess. The fish loved the worms (and food) but had to hand feed. Worms in feeders is not a good idea.

Well, I've just made it back to the pond. I think I can rule out bag dust. The food is disappearing at about double the rate it should and much of the feed is coming out crumbled or dusty still. I think I'll let it run empty and investigate further. Maybe about 6 weeks back, I arrived to find one of the buckles on the lid was unbuckled and that side of the lid was ajar. I figure some bugs made their way in then.

What kind of feeder is it? If not a TH or similar then there is a possibility that coons are reaching in and getting the feed out. If not that then possibly bugs down in the bottom of barrel crumbling it up as they eat. Dig down to the bottom of feeder and you can tell

Pat, it is a TH. I suspect it is bugs. I either left the lid ajar or I had a visitor tamper with it. It was about half full today so I didn't have much luck digging to the bottom. I'm gonna let it run empty and investigate. If there is evidence of bugs, I will clean it out and refill and hopefully nothing funny happens with the lid again.

Sometimes the bugs come in the feed.... not uncommon at all..if it’s not clogging up the works I would run it through maybe a little faster than normal and then Cleanout the feeder an watch the freshness of the feed that you are getting.i won’t buy any that’s 3 months old.... but that’s me.

If you have any feed that has turned gray, throw it out on shore, NOT in the pond. It's gone bad and may be toxic to the fish.

Some dust will be created during the feed going thru the spinner and the throwing fan. Some dust is normal, and you will see your YOY feeding on the small pieces and dust. I think some dust is a good thing.

The YOY wouldn’t dare venture out to where the dust is but the adults skim the surface til it’s gone

Much of the dust from mine is within a couple feet of the shore.
