Stocked 100 perch in my pond 4 years ago. Two years ago I caught one about 8 inches long. Super excited I was. Found only one dead last year and it was 9 inches. Have not caught any of that size, but have caught young ones from time to time so they must be reproducing. It is a mystery if they are there or not and or how to confirm. Help? FYI I stocked my LM Bass, white and black crappie, bluegill, and my channel cats all at the same time.

It's tough for yellow perch to survive in a pond where largemouth are present.

+1 on that as well.

If you have lots of good cover like 50% your chances are good at having lots of them. The key is to fish for them just at dusk and get right on the bottom with a worm. For us here mid may we can't keep them off the hook. After their spawn they feed like wolves.

LMB at 6"-18" and channel cats at 16" plus eat lot of small perch and consume a larger percentage of YP when they are at the same density as BG in the pond. When you are fishing with small worms under a slender bobber the ratio of fish caught provides a good indication of their relative density in the pond.

Funky,
If you get some good quality food (I use Optimal BG) the perch will soon be there to eat it. I hand throw to the same spot in the pond and not every day like I should but when I get a chance or when the weather allows. The YP like to stay hidden I the deeper water and you won't see them very well as they make stealth runs then dart up to grab and then immediately back down. The bigger YP will stay on the bottom and just eat the leftovers as they sink.

I only feed when water warms up a bit in spring through late fall when water is getting cold again. If you truly have YP only in your pond then you might not to get to see too much surface action like you would with other fish. But they are eating it and will get nice and fat.

I have no idea how to feed in winter as we want to skate on our pond so keep it as frozen as possible.

The forage for my YP in winter is scads of young GSH, probably they eat a fair amount of the young of the year of their own babies (YP) and may eat snails, crayfish, and perhaps a few baby RES?

If the all YP pond has some cover habitat, then FHM should be able to maintain a resident population that will reproduce and allow the YP to eat when not getting pellets. However I find that FHM will struggle to sustain themselves in an all YP pond when the perch are not fed pellets for most of the year. Pellet feeding is a high amount of supplemental food and significantly reduces predation of YP on small fish. Addition of one or a combination of Michigan native minnows, golden shiners, spotfin shiners, and bluntnose minnows to an all perch pond would provide cold water food for YP. Another option is to stock some FHM in fall for winter feeding by YP.

YP do actively feed during 39F-40F water but what they eat lasts a lot longer in cold water compared to water of 60F-70F.

Bill,
my pond is not that old about 3 years, half-acre, and you know I am in mid-Michigan. What would be a good cover for YP in my area? I have some coming but nearly as much as I should have for YP. Maybe I should work on that before I put YP in and maybe put them in the pond later in the fall. You are not that far off my location, what do you think?

Thanks!!

If you want some natural cover look into buying some "small spread
variety" hybrid water lilies. Plant them around 2' deep. They spread slow in a new pond and are easily controlled with proper herbicide. If you get the small or medium spread ones you will never have an over abundance of them. I like broken types side walk concrete for minnow - crayfish shoreline cover. You can add it as you locate it. One whole shoreline with broken concrete down to 3 ft deep is great habitat cover.

If you add 2-4 lbs of FHM this spring there should be lots of them by fall. YP prefer the 1"-1.5" sizes which should be very abundant in fall -winter.
