I have a pond filtration system that pumps into my house from my pond...10 stages of filtration that eventully get clear enough and clean enough to drink. (This is not our fishing pond and does not have fish living in it)

I do not have access to city water and have adapted my pond to use for our water supply at the cabin. The water has gotten muddy and turbid.

I have read in the muddy water part of the forum and the solutions like alum sulfate and gypsum are not safe options for clearing if the water is going to be ingested.

Are there any other options that would help clarify and settle the pond water that are not one of these 2 options? (I have used hydrated lime and will use that again but need more treatment).

Thank you for your thoughts!

Oasis, Aluminum Sulfate, or a polymer version, like poly aluminum chlorhydrate is used in virtually every public drinking water supply. Alum is safe in drinking water as long as you keep the pH above 5.4. Aluminum does not dissolve into water unless the water is acidic (the 5.4 pH threshold).

First, find out why your water is suddenly turbid doing jar tests. Put at least one sample in the dark for a few days so you know if it is an algae or other small cell plant

If it's suddenly gone turbid it sounds like you might have a silt influx or mechanical agitation problem.

Has anything changed upstream? Construction? Plowing?

Do you have bottom foraging fish like carp or catfish?

Do you know how to tell if it is an algae or small cell plant? I would like to do the test, but need to know how to determine the result.
Thanks

Thanks for your reply. No fish are in the pond, as we use this pond for the household water supply.

It has always been turbid but has gotten more so. The water only flows in from direct rainfall and one bank. Nothing above that bank has changed.

Thanks for any thoughts

Just becuse you didn't put fish in, doesn't mean they won't find a way in naturally, and mudcats can do what you are seeing. You need to find the cause, then figure out the solution.
