I want to use the river on my farm to fill my pond. Has anyone made a sand filter to clean the water of fish, parasites and fish eggs? Will running the water through a dump trunk load of gravel do the job? Thanks for the help.

Sounds like quite a project. Why do you want the river water to flow into your pond? Just for the first fill up? I am having trouble imagining that gravel, or even sand, could filter out parasites or some types of unwanted vegetation, but I'm here to learn!

On my 1 1/2 Pond the runoff is on the lower end of acceptable. It will take around 3 million gallons to fill. I don’t want to spend all the money for a well and run it dry. I have a river 600 feet away with a lot of water. It will take 90 days to fill if we get no rain. I want to use the river as a supplement in case of dry times. I know a sand filter will work just not sure of how big to make it. They use it in pools to remove algae. Gravel would be much easier to do but not sure if it would work. I’m in a hurry because my dad turned 89 and I want to see him catch a fish from our pond.

You might want to reach out to these folks for advice and feasibility....thats a lot of water to pass through a sand filter. Are you planning to backflush? Im assuming this will be gravity fed? Sand has a crazy low flow rate and to remove parasites youll have to go slower http://www.northernfiltermedia.com/ they have some nice ponds btw

Planning on a initial fill. Then do a total fish kill. I would use a filter to maintain it during dry periods. Thanks for the link.
