Hello

Is it true that certain states in the U.S.A encourage their citizens who have ponds to put in fish from the state (native fish).

To always have a reserve of these fish and a security in the event that an ecological catastrophe would occur, the state would have an inventory of the citizens who have these fish.

A+

Nebraska will help stock private ponds with BG and LMB with a few caveats. Fishing licenses are required to fish the pond, state fishing regulations apply, and the owner needs to let at least one non family member fish the pond at least once a year. There are other requirements such as a minimum pond size and no other fish present in order to qualify for free BG and LMB stocking. It isn't about disaster preperation but about expanding fishing oppertunities in the state. Nebraska also publishes a pond managment book for private bodies of water and has private waters biologist on staff help private owners manage their ponds.

Fish are inexpensive when compared to the loss of control over your waters.

My opinion as well. Buy fewer fish and wait. I am all for environmental improvement, but some regulations actually work against this. I personally want to build a 3 acre pond-wetland complex on my dime that catches water from 80 acres of adjacent cropland. The outflow is to an "EPA" impaired" creek. Local obstacles have so far prevented this and I am trying to get the NRCS to design it to grease the wheels. After 3 years, they may get me a design this year, but no promises. That is just step one. When I originally bid this out, the contractor agreed to an acceptable price until he hit the local permit process. The issue was not the design, but rather required "studies" on impact. In the meantime, water from 80 across of corn and beans flows into the impaired creek. I guess that I would call myself a conservative conservationist. Maybe I need to start a club by that name?

Enlightened (knowledgeable) private landowners are the true stewards of the land (conservationists).

We are dinosaurs. Too bad because conservation by landowners is very sustainable and less susceptible to political whims (IMO).

Its too bad that folks like this are spread across the country rather than being neighbors. It would be great to gather on a porch in the evening and share a beer with like-minded friends. Just got off the phone with my daughter who bought a home 1.5 hours away. Life is very good! My son just bought a house a few weeks back in the same town as my daughter (college town where they went to school). Daughter just got promoted at work too! She is some worker! Now we just need Spring to arrive... 7 degrees tomorrow morning:(
