NOTE -- ARITHMETIC ERROR, THE WATER SAID USAGE WAS 28000, NOT 58000.

Got a courtesy call from the rural water company yesterday telling me we used 28000 gallons of water between 11/25 and 12/24. We normally use between 3000 and 4000 per month. Later in the day I got a bill for $445.00. We checked the meter when we knew no water was running. The meter was not moving. The outside faucets were turned off for at least 15 days of the month and we found no running water before we turned them off for the winter

Is this even possible ? How long would it take to use 20000 gallons if an outside hose was running.

Any idea how big of a vessel, like a swimming pool, would be to hold that much water. ?

Wow! That's expensive water!

20,000 gallons would be a square swimming pool about 21 x 21 feet and 6 feet deep.

A garden hose pumping 10 gpm could do it in about 34 hours

We have a 18'x34' pool and they told us that it was right at 20,000 gallons.I would think it would take no more than 24 hours to fill.

We've calculated that volume of water would only raise our pond level by 3 inches. Pretty spendy way to top off a pond.

Our rural water company will help us find a leak; they then will credit us the cost of the overage if we can fix said leak. Rather decent of them, don't you think?

$ 441.00.

Water company didn't show up to check things out yesterday as promised, I have this feeling that I'll be paying this one.

Fred, I'm having the same problem on a rent house. A woman and 2 small children live there. I pay the water bill so don't have 100% certainty of what is going on. The meter is not moving when I go and check it. But, $200 water bills when the sprinkler system isn't going has me mystified.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Sometimes they estimate your usage for months and don't read the actual meter. Then toward the end of the year they read it and sometimes you play catchup. Have had that happen more than once

A leaking toilet stool valve will waste a surprising amount of water. Found that out a couple times when the church stool or urinal valve leaked for a month. What was a normally base usage amount, increased significantly.

Another thing that will do it for electricity is a hot water tank leaking hot water out into the drain system unnoticed.
