Is there any golfers on Pond Boss?

My buddy's and I do a golf trip south every year. We like to do the week between March break and Easter this year.

We would like to try Texas this year and wondering of any tips of good places to stay and play. A resort with two courses close enough to an airport that we can take a cab would be great.

Cheers Don.

Don, Texas has all different types of golf courses in all different types of terrain and in different climates in March or April. "it depends" smile in what part of the state u wind up in. I was a 6 a few years back and now today I am afraid to even swing a club. I miss the game! If you ever get around E. Texas look into Crown Colony @ Lufkin. Old PGA course I think, you will need a long game smile

Tracy, would Rayburn country work for them? I know it has 3 courses. I have never golfed but by best fishing buddy goes there a lot. Don't know if they are speaking of a major airport but Jasper has a small airport. Heck, even here in Pineland we have our own small airport. Golden Nugget Casino Resort in nearby Lake Charles Louisiana has a very nice new course.

Don, give me a few to find an old thread. I had a few suggestions last time you considered a trip down to TX.

I have played Rayburn many times because my FIL lived there for about 4 yrs. The three 9 hole courses are worth playing but in my opinion I would rank them pretty low when comparing golf courses in and across Texas. After giving it some thought and I was flying in and out and only had a taxi, I would learn toward Austin/College Station. Their are some Championship courses there that are well know across the USA. I have played a few of them back when I played a lot of Golf and Austin is easy to fly into, I would look into Southwest Airlines. But, if the Opportunity arises don't forget Crown. Lots of old character there in that Champion course, and not that far from Austin/College Station. Don, Keep it down the middle smile

Here's my old post. I would recheck the reviews on the places I recommended. It's been a while.

First, I would probably stay at Garden Valley near Tyler TX. Tyler is about 2 hours east of DFW, and an easy drive once you get out of the Metroplex. You can play golf there, and then make short road trips to 2 other courses, Pine Dunes and Twin Lakes. All 3 courses are outstanding, and are particularly fun in the spring when the azaleas and dogwoods are blooming. I will tell you that Pine Dunes is a big boy course, and be a tad tough if you guys play from the tips.

I certainly won't offer any swing suggestions, but it sure sounds like the driver's club face is wiping across the ball at contact and creating too much side spin.

If it was me, I would probably get some $2 driveway markers, and have a friend take some phone pics of both my ball position, and body alignment. Pics from the side and back can sure tell you a lot before you ever swing the club. If the camera allows it, I would also take those same shots with slo-mo video enabled on the phone. All this should at least let you know where you're at right now.

The only real issue that I have with lessons from a qualified PGA professional, is the transition time that it takes to get from one swing to another. My personal experience with high school golf teams is that one can get trapped between a "corrected" swing, and the old one, and one tends to revert to a swing that at least keeps the ball in play. Practicing with one swing, and playing with another sure makes the process difficult.

I think Lee Trevino said it best when he said "You can talk to a fade, but a hook won't listen". There's a lot of truth in that, and you're pretty close to that scenario, so any changes I might make would start out being very minor. In short, refine the swing you have before you rebuild it from the ground up.

Hope this helps, it's just my 2 cents.

Don, if you're wanting to stay close to an airport, Bear Creek has 2 cources, and is adjacent to DFW Airport.

Don I am not a golfer and I don't know about cost, but some of my friends say "Cowboys Golf Club" is really nice. Cowboys Golf Club fits your desired description because it is within 10 minutes of DFW Airport and it sits right on Lake Grapevine. Plus Cowboys Golf Club is practically next door to the totally awesome Gaylord Texan Resort. I think Gaylord Texan Resort has some kind of package available for guests that wish to golf at Cowboys Golf Club.

Al, I have played Garden Valley many times and it is a fun course to play. I have not played the others mentioned, I wish I would have played them. If Flying into Tyler and if someone has a golf club membership that will reciprocate with other courses, you have to play Holly Tree in Tyler. Pond owners have to like that place, it has 17 water hazards lol. Take lots of Balls when playing it the first time. Going back to Dons request, I have to say golf courses come in many forms in Texas. I love playing a golf course where the fairway is like hitting off of your living room carpet. And they greens are so large and smooth the ball rolls in all different directions. But, I hate missing that shot that put me outside of a few feet from the pin, and I don't have to read all that green. smile There all are a few like that in Texas but not many. Austin has a couple of resorts like that, Houston has some but they may be hard to get to tee times on and Dallas has one there a Byron Nelson
Champion course.

The greater Houston metropolitan area in home to about 165 golf courses as well as being a great cultural art and foodie destination. There are some really amazing courses that bubble up to the top of the list here in Houston that I'm sure are rated and reviews easily found by fellow golfers.

While probably not playable without someone hosting you since it's private, Tiger's first signature course in the US that is getting some amazing buzz right now (Bluejack National) and was just was rated #1 residential golf course in Texas and #11 in the nation by Golfweek. Maybe you could find someone to hook you up?

I have some close friends that are golfers that I'd be happy to approach for public course recommendations if Houston ends up being a destination of interest.

Cheers!

Guess we have chosen a town to go to for golfing. Harlingen texas will be the destination.

Any thoughts on the town, weather, local courses?

Cheers Don.

We are thinking of Rancho Viejo Resort & Country Club.

Anyone have any idea of the area and what the club is like?

Its right between Brownsville and Harlingen.

Yes FireIsHot, I spent the last two years changing my swing. It has been the best thing for my game. This year I entered three tournaments and won longest drive in two with around 285 yards and on the fairway.

I have found that I do like the callaway chrome soft ball. I can get some good green stick with them and my Taylor-made ATV wedges.

The courses we play regularly we need to scuff shoot all our irons. IF you try to take a divot you will find that the wedge will bounce. I played a course in Florida last year that was just the most amazing course I have ever played. YOu could take a good clean divot and get great back spin. Shot a 78 but most of it was the course. It was the most expensive round of golf I have ever played but was worth every penny.

Cheers Don.

Well everyone thanks for your help on this. I guess the guys feel that Brownsville area is too sketchy for them.

We are going to go to San Antonio. If there is any course recommendations and great places to eat while we are down there that would be great. Really is nothing better then first hand recommendations.

On our Florida trip a few years ago we were told to try Manies chop house. That is the most amazing recommendation anyone had given us. We went back two years in a row after that. Great place and best steak I have ever had.

Cheers Don.

Don, as a frequent visitor, I can help you with SA. I'll update this post later this morning with specifics. Maybe some local guys will chime in.

The Quarry? I think it's tricked up a smidge, but it is a great course for gambling if you guys are into that. High risk and reward course.

La Cantera Golf Club? Very nice course.

Hill Country Golf Club? Very nice course, and very playable.

I will say that these courses can be penal if you get off the fairways. At least when I still played, all these courses were in immaculate shape.

I don't remember playing any munis in SA.

As far as dining, Mi Tierra is pretty cool, and La Margirita is usually a stop for us. Both are at the Mercado, and owned by the same people. Mi Tierra has a great bakery, and never closes. Usually street venders are there too on weekends. If you do get cart food, which we always do, don't ask them what you're eating, just enjoy it. We had dives scattered around between SA and Boerne, but most have closed, so we're still on the lookout for questionable, but tasty food.

You can always hit the riverwalk for dining, but we don't. It's nice, but touristy.

Hope this helps.
