I have been to Highflyers PBF get together's twice and enjoyed both times immensely. I have heard of some of the get together's in Nebraska before I became a forum member.

So after thinking about it for a couple years it is time for me to step up to the plate and invite any PBF members that would like to come to a get together at our place.

Right now it will be a firm tentative date of September 22, 2018. There will be food, fishing and fellowship.

Location will be Pittsburg, Kansas and there are lots of reasonable motels within 6 miles of our place and a casino motel within one mile. Shopping for non-pond interested spouses at 4 miles to Pittsburg and 20 miles to Joplin, Mo. And Carolynn makes a pretty good hostess too.

No cost to attend other than your travel cost.

More details will come about next April but I wanted to get a thread started and a time line so people could pencil the date into their plans. I will re-visit and keep this thread going as new information comes along.

Edit 3-8-18: Sepember 22, 2018 is the date.

It's a 4.5 hr drive for me to get to Pittsburg. I drive a lot longer than that to attend things I've got a lot less interest in. Put my name is a an attendee. Not sure about the lovely wife, but I would like to get together with some other pond enthusiasts. I'd at least like to hear how loud an aerator is. Since noise is one of the reasons I've decided against it.
Thanks for even considering this.
Jeff

Thanks Eric. I probably will not do much promotion through this winter but I wanted to get a date out there so people could pencil it in. I will bring the thread up again about next March or April then periodically through the rest of the year till it happens.

I do not expect a lot of commitments this early, just wanted to get it on the calendar before everyone's time slots got filled up.

John,

It would be a little over 600 miles for me but still very tempting. I'll watch for updates as the time gets closer. If it works out, I will get with you to see what I can bring to share. smile

Snrub has a very nice place. It's about 125 miles for me, about 2-1/2 hours. Lots of traffic in between at times. In the big picture, we are practically neighbors.

The more the merrier. For the really long distance travelers we do have an airport in Joplin Missouri about 20 miles away from our ponds. American regional jets only. Small airport.

Iowegian's and all others welcome.

John F and his wife have already been up to visit and I was hoping they would be able to make it. Bring your Mr Crappie rod and the Gulp Alive waxies.

Planning on it but it will be sometime next spring or summer before we can. We have tried a couple times but just could not make connections. But it is a beautiful motorcycle ride to your area, so it will be no problem drifting down your direction. Carolynn really enjoyed the company of your wife.

Date is established for September 22, 2018. Put it on your calendar. Pittsburg, Kansas. We live on a working farm and there is plenty of room to stretch your legs.

For a little fishing fun we have our 3 acre main pond stocked conventially with LMB, BG, RES and CC that is now 5 years old. We also have an old refurbished one acre pond with the same fish but added GSF and BH for some variety.

Also have a new pond to show off that is about an acre that is dedicated to raising RES and just last fall stocked with SMB for the predator to control the RES numbers. It will not have any big fish to catch, but if anyone wants to try their hand at catching a RES in a pond without competing BG getting to the hook first, there should be significant numbers of catchable size by September. Also if someone just wants to help me a little in some SMB transfers, the SMB should be of size I will be ready to catch up to about 30 of the overstocked and move to my main pond. They will only be a foot or so long, so no great excitment, but maybe something different to catch if you don't have SMB in your pond. I plan on having a holding cage set up that day specifically for the purpose should anybody be interested.

Enough for now. More details as time goes by.

I will put this on my calendar and check back as the time approaches.
Probably only a two hour drive from my home and only an hour from my pond. Will have to clear it with the "boss" as we have young kiddos.

Great! Thanks for bringing this thread back to the top. I have been thinking about how and when I should start promoting this so it is on the minds of those who might want to attend.

One unfortunate thing that happened was, even after planning and getting it on the calendar a year ahead, my wife had one of her important meetings that they changed on her so she will not be able to attend. She hated that as she has been to two of Highflyers events and enjoyed them. Plus it will put a little more load on me for preparations but we will manage.

Most people will be coming within driving distance like you, but I also plan to come up with a list of local attractions and places to stay just in case some people want to travel from further away or bring the family and have something for them to do while we have the get together around the pond. Southeast Kansas is not exactly on most peoples top ten travel destinations list but we do have a few attractions around and things to do.

Anyway as time gets closer I will keep getting more specifics together. Saturday September 22, 2018. Location just south of Pittsburg, Kansas.

This is so tempting, and I am so close. Tentative for me because my work schedule varies, but those smallies should be fun on a 4wt fly rod!

Thanks for planning this. I know how much time and effort it takes.

Hope you all can make it and I do not see it as being a really big issue as far as the effort. We do some family reunions here and have had groups before so it is not something out of the ordinary for us.

I think it will be a lot of fun getting to match some faces with names/handles here on the forum and hopefully seeing some familiar faces also.

John, Do you have a drop-dead date for RSVP'n? September is quite a ways out there for me to even think about yet.

SetterGuy and CMM, I'd bet we are all in the path of getting to Pittsburgh, Kansas...carpooling sounds like an option. I could be good for gas money and a meal on the way down and back. My old truck does not like to leave town and if I take my wife's car, she'll likely have to go, and I bet she could find places to shop that John didn't even know about! It could get expensive quick. laugh

I will not even worry about RSVP's till about a month or maybe six weeks before the event.

We have plenty of room and can handle anywhere between one and one hundred people so the only thing we will really need is a somewhat close head count for the right amount of food for lunch. That will not be finalized till probably a week before.

So no rush.

Qtr acre. I’m thinking if the weather is right, I may ride a motorcycle down. I can take all my camping gear, or if we are staying in hotels, even easier. Probably the only rod I could bring is my 4 wt fly rod. It’s a four piece, but I’m not all that proficient with it. If, it looks like rain, I’ll take the Tundra, and I’d be happy to pick you guys up as I come through.

We have been pretty dry here comparatively speaking through the winter but enough rain to do what we need to in the fields. Main pond is still down a few inches but not bad. Too often here in the spring we get deluge rains but none so far this spring. Planting corn today. Beautiful here this morning but predictions of some nasty cold weather the next couple days. Hope you get the rain you need.

One good thing about our pond and this place is we have gravel all around the main, sediment and forage ponds, being a working farm plenty of gravel parking area and we have garages/sheds that all I have to do is pull some vehicles out and we have cover. So as long as any rain is not a full day long event modest amounts will not cause big problems. I'm often out around the pond immediately after any rain as the gravel all around it and the flat bench design of the dam makes for solid footing. If there is rain in the forecast rubber boots might not be a bad thing to bring along.

The date you are having the gathering is usually the driest part of the year, at least around here, only 99 miles SSE of you in a straight line distance.

We put quite a bit of thought in choosing the date and weather was a big part of it. Like you say usually dry that time of year. Usually......

Still warm enough to be enjoyable and not so late in the year to be cold but late enough after summer that temps and water temps in the pond should be ok for fishing. We stayed away from July or August because families taking vacations and awfully hot and hard on the fish if we allowed fishing.

Usually mid September is a very pleasant time of year around here. Hopefully will be on Sept 22.

Bump.

Just a reminder for anyone interested. I'm hosting a PBF get together Saturday Sepember 22, 2018 just south of Pittsburg, Kansas (SE corner of Kansas). More specific details as we get closer to the date. It will start at about 10am although anyone can show up and fish any time after 9am. Lunch will be at noon and the shindig will last till the last person leaves that day.

Mostly just a chance to match up faces with names here on PBF, visit a little and do some SE Kansas pond fishing if you want to. No Kansas fishing license required on private ponds.

Great!

For anyone traveling some distance and wanting to make a "mini-vacation" out of the trip, here is a link to some tourists attractions in SE Kansas. We are not exactly in the top 10 world destinations for tourism but there are actually some interesting minor things to do.

Things to do while in Southeast Kansas area

The last one on the list, Big Brutus, is less than 20 miles from our pond and if you like big machinery is definitely worthwhile. Wife and I are lifetime members.

It has been many years since I been to the Dalton Gang museum but I remember it from my school days as a grade school trip (bout a hundred years ago I think) and when I took my own kids when they were small. The Martin and Osa Johnson Museum is from days gone by when the adventurers recorded their treks with cameras that had a crank to operate them. Also been many years since I been there but I have fond memories.

Another one that is not on that list and just 7 miles from my pond is Crawford County historical musem . It is a very small local museum but covers the coal mining (both strip and underground) history of this area as well as other pioneer era memorabilia.

We have a very nice casino/motel just a little over a mile from our pond. Kansas Crossing. Casino's are not my cup of tea but Bob Lusk stayed there at the Hampton and told me it was a good choice with price comparable to the other Pittsburg motel he usually stayed at. He thought he would stay there again when in the area. I have been in the casino once and it was fine as casinos go. Nice and new. A quick search for Pittsburg Kansas motels will turn up quite a number of selections with most under ten miles from our pond.

I'm not promoting SE Kansas as a vacation destination but for someone retired with no kids in school there are some area things that could be fun to do with a spouse that might make nice add-on to the PBF get together.

Joplin Missouri is also only 25 miles away and has its own set of attractions.
Things to do in Southwest Missouri . And Branson and all its attractions is a little over two hours drive from our pond.

A little known history fact about Joplin Missouri had to do with the infamous Bonnie and Clyde. You can only drive by the location, but for Route 66 travelers it is a piece of area history. As is the famed Spook Light (which I have went to see a few times but have never seen it).

Just some FYI in case anyone is interested in spending some extended time in the area.

Bump.

Don't forget to put it on your calendar and make plans to attend.

Sepember 22, 2018 is the date.

Pittsburg, Kansas (right in the SE corner of Kansas)

If anyone has any suggestions I'm open to them. My basic plan is just for an informal (no Tuxedos needed) meet and greet with some visiting and fishing.

Rex the rainman has suggested that I get my scuba gear out and give lessons but I nixed that one. Not a certified instructor (so I don't think my homeowners insurance would cover liability it if I drowned someone) and the visibility in my pond is about 18" and when you stir the mud bottom up about 0" so not much fun anyway. But thanks for the suggestion REX.

Pond Boss Magazine and forum vendors: I'm not going to solicit samples for door prizes or anything like that. But if any of you want to attend or bring or send along some samples to put on a table for the taking by participants by all means you are welcome to do so. I welcome the supporting Pond Boss advertisers to come and meet some of your customers / potential customers. And catch a few fish.

Lusk told me the other day that he and Otto were going to check their schedules and try and make it up if they could.

"professionally built and managed pond". laugh laugh laugh

Now THAT is funny. Surprised I just noticed what SetterGuy said. You will definitely have to go some place else if you want to see a "professionally built and managed pond" but I sure hope you make it here too!

I have built all of the ponds on this place personally (although the largest 3 acre pond saw a lot of scraper and dozer seat time by a couple of good employees) but I am by no means a professional pond builder or fisheries manager. I consider myself a professional farmer and beyond that just a redneck that kind of knows how to run machinery. (the largest pond was designed on paper by a NRCS agent so was professionally designed - the other smaller ponds were designed by the seat of my pants and a laser level).

But I think the ponds turned out pretty well despite my lack of formal building and pondmeister education and I hope a lot of you all on the forum will "come see".

BTW snrub, I've got disappointing news. My BG x RES experiment appears to have been a failure. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as though I'll have any for you when you come up this way for Husker Harvest Days. Sorry. Maybe next year.

Snrub is a better pond builder than probably over 90% of people who advertise as professional pond builders, from what I have seen.

He knows about proper soils and compaction, pipe installation, finishing, etc.

Most "pond builders" don't know or seem to care about proper compaction, or the right soil type that will be successful.

John, What to you see the schedule like for the day. You mentioned lunch, so I assume you are planning this outing to be a mid day event?

What time do the gates open and what time are you turning off the lights?

I'm just thinking about the traveling, the wife's shopping, and maybe enjoying the nearby dragstip!

Show up anytime after about 9am. Lunch around noon. Hang around as late as anyone wants to visit. At Highflyer's get together most are leaving by 5 but later is no problem. Bulk of the people there probably between 11am and 4pm. More details tonight. Very informal. Just a bunch getting together sharing common interests.

Anyone wanting to bring a dish or food is welcome to do so and if you are a great cook with a signature dish great, but do not feel obligated. Lunch is my treat. Some people do not like to come empty handed and that is fine, but I don't want anyone feel like they need to stop by a grocery store to get a bag of chips or cookies just so they will be bringing something. Your attendance is the important part.

There will be a couple coolers filled with diet and regular soft drinks and tea. There will be no beer provided but if anyone wants to bring their own cooler I have no problem with that as long as they drink responsibly.

These details are perhaps a little premature but I will try to reemphasize them a week or so before hand. A week or two ahead of the event I will ask for some indications of how many plan to attend, mostly for determining how much food to prepare for lunch. We have room for 10 or 100 but based on Highflyer's event I've attended twice my best guess at this time is we might have 15-25 people attending.

Bring fishing gear and lawn chairs. We have some folding chairs but those folding canvas lawn chairs with the cup holders that everybody has are much more comfortable so bring your own if you remember.

We have a 3 acre pond that I can pretty well guarantee fast action BG fishing. Probably no trophys but a lot of action. I hooked and "almost" landed what I estimate was a 4# LMB caught on a 1/64 oz jig while fishing for BG about a week ago. I had no landing net and as I reached down for it, it flipped the barbless hook and took off. I was relieved because at the time it was really too hot to be handling LMB so was glad to see it get off so easily. CC 4+#. So I think there is some decent fishing. Also have a 1 acre pond and if anyone wants to sample my new SMB in my RES pond I have been catching 4-10" ones to see how they have been doing. Feisty little buggers.

Will try to add more details as I think of them.

I’m still planning on riding a motorcycle down from St Louis. I’ve got relatives in Springfield MO, so I can travel in and out of there.
Looking forward to it! (I’m sure your ponds are 1000% better managed than mine. Hoping to learn a lot.)

9 yr old pond, 1 ac, 15' deep.
RES, YP, GS, FHM (no longer), HBG (going away), SMB, and HSB (only one seen in 5 yrs) Restocked HSB (2020) Have seen one of these.
I think that's about all I should put in my little pond.

Motorcycle ride sounds great. We have been promising to take a motorcycle ride down to see John Fitzgerald and his pond in mid Arkansas down the Pig Trail but between my wife getting her knee replaced, me working a lot more than I have been used to, it being unbearably hot for several weeks, we simply have not rode nearly as much as we usually do this year. Short rides up town for lunch and such have been about it this year. I ride a 1800 Goldwing on longer rides and a 950 Yamaha V-Star to putt around locally. Wife rides a Can-AM Spyder.

From Springfield just a short ways west on I44 you can get off on hwy 96 and come straight west if you want to get off the interstate. I am right on hwy 171 out of Missouri which 96 intersects with.

I don't know that my ponds are managed that well but I do spend a lot of time messing with them. I am out there every day at least long enough to feed and usually considerably longer any time we are at home.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Setter if you come through Springfield I highly recommend a tour of the new aquariums at Bass Pro: http://www.wondersofwildlife.org/

I will probably be out of town part of that weekend but if you (or anyone else on here) are here during the week I can get you inside with my passes and save you some bucks.

I try to stay off the interstate, but if I need to make time I’ll ride 44 for a bit. I’ll for sure hop off on 96. Thanks.
Red on the Head, thanks for the offer. I don’t think I’ll be able to get in to the new aquariums that weekend, as I’ll be pressed for time. Thank you for the offer. I’ve heard the new exhibits are amazing.

See you all there (I’m hoping)

Jeff

This is some of the CC my wife has been smoking in the smoker. She is planning on making up some smoked channel catfish dip for the get together for you all to try. Picture of how the fish turned out from the smoker. It is pretty tasty. I had to sample some right when it came out of the smoker. grin Make sure it was fit to eat. wink

For those traveling distance and planning on staying over night the night before, there is a fried chicken place called Chicken Annies Annex which is just a mile and a quarter from my place and right across the road from the Kansas Crossing Casino/ Hampton Inn motel. I'll plan on having dinner there about 6pm and if anyone wants to join me they can let me know when it gets closer to the date. I will put out a reminder.

Chicken places are kind of a landmark for Pittsburg and the surrounding area. The original Chicken Annies and Chicken Marys along with Gebhardts and Barto's are all coal mining era fried chicken dinner places that came about when Pittsburg was an immigration melting pot mining area. Some local flavor good eating.

Saturday September 22. RSVP not required but appreciated to help with the food amounts for Saturday lunch.

RStringer had ask me for a location and I told him I would post it a couple weeks ahead of the event. Then I realized we are only 3 weeks away now.

I'm not going to post my mailing address or phone number in this open forum because the spammers, telephone solicitors and trash mail is already bad enough. Plus on several GPS units I have if I put in my home address it takes you about 5 miles away (maybe they are trying to tell me something?). But anyone wanting to talk to me about the event and needs my phone number just send me a PM (private message) by clicking on my poster handle snrub and request it.

For trip planning purposes I'm just a mile east from the corner south of the Kansas Crossing Casino/Hampton Inn and Chicken Annies Annex just 3 miles south of Pittsburg, Kansas. A mile east of the 69/400/171 highway junction (that junction is just a quarter mile south of the casino, Conoco truck stop on that corner) on hwy 171 and you are there. For anyone wanting to come in the night before and needs a place to eat I recommend Chicken Annies Annex (right across from the Kansas Crossing Casino and Hampton Inn Hotel ) and I will be there at 6pm on Friday September 21 wearing my bona fide Pond Boss Cap if anyone wants to join me. PM or call me the day before or that day so I can get a table arranged.

If you want one of those bona fide Pond Boss Caps of your very own, last I knew Mr Pond Boss himself, Bob Lusk, was planning on attending. I'm guessing he will have a box of those hats with him (if he is the smart guy I think he is) and you could save yourself some shipping costs. Maybe even more. One more reason to attend.

John,
I really wanted to come, but now I’ve got a family obligation I need to be at that Saturday. Was really looking forward to riding down and visiting.
Sorry about that. I’m trying to weasel my way out of it, so there’s still a spark of hope, but right now count me out. frown

PB meetings are top notch and a great time meeting everyone. If you can go - DO - you will be glad you went. I would be there if it was closer to me but Kansas is to far from MS.

Sorry to hear you will not make it Jeff but I understand. Heck even my wife ended up with a conflict and we had our schedules set so that would not happen but hers changed and she is in charge of setting part of it up so can't bow out.

You will probably be passing through this way some day. PM me and if we are home stop by. We'll have our own private PB get together. John F has came up and visited.

Thanks Eric. A PBF get together that Highflyer had in east Texas is where we met the first time (the second one I attended). Sorry you will not make it but I certainly understand.

I was hoping to meet you Shorty but I understand. Trying to pick a date for something like this is just a shot in the dark for picking a time people will be able to make it. We will hook up some day though.

I was hoping to have a RES catching expert to show me how big my RES are. I mostly catch small ones. grin

Great news Brian. Be great to see you again and glad you are bringing your better half also.

Great to hear you are going to make it. Look forward to meeting you.

Had enough rain recently the main pond as well as sediment and forage ponds are full and in good shape. Old pond and RES pond still near a foot low but the water is in good shape.

Now just hoping for decent weather on the 22nd. We have all weather roads all around the ponds near the house and a good dock so even if it is wet it's no problem.

Edit: The picture shows our farmstead with the rock house I was born in (I was not born in a barn, but only a hundred feet from one) grin in the background. That house is now our farm office and the house where we will have lunch is the slate covered house next to it where I live.

Thanks for the pond compliment john k. We get a lot of enjoyment from the pond and many times over what I initially imagined we would.

Thanks for the reminder about pictures Al. I still go back to highflyers pictures for reference once in a while.

Well, I don't think there was a cut off date, so my wife and I are planning on attending. We will drive in from Branson on Saturday morning. It looks like Pittsburg Is a college town and there is weekend activities, so the mentioned Hampton Inn has a two night minimum and the rate is over $200.00 per night. Since we will start back to Illinois after the event we will likely just stay in Joplin MO or Springfield, based on how late the meeting run.

Snrub, let know if this doesn't work for you.

I am sending you a message in an hour or so.

Fred

So glad to have you!

No cutoff date at all. We can handle anyone that wants to come.

Wow I did not know the motels were doing that or that there was anything going on in town. I don't follow sports so had no idea. Sheesk! I would stay in Joplin too. I think Bob lusk told me when he stayed there, IIRC, it was 88 dollars.

We are right on 171 hwy between Pittsburg and Joplin. About a 30 minute drive from Joplin depending on where you are staying at. Two or three hours from Branson. When you come across the state line into Kansas on hwy 171 it is about 3.5 miles to our place. When you cross the bridge at cow creek it is one half more mile. South side of road, there are 4 driveways into the farmstead, you can come in any of them but your final target is the last one and the slate covered house. Pond is behind it. I'll tack my Pond Boss cap out on the pole.

If you get to the Conoco truck stop and the junction of 69/400 highways, turn around and come back east a mile. You missed it. grin

Sounds great John. Be good to see you again. The BG are waiting. Ponds are in good shape.

I'm in Nebraska now. Going to Husker Harvest Days for a couple days to a big farm equipment show. Will meet up with Nedoc after work tomorrow to see him and his pond and HSB!

No I do not. My best guess is between ten and twenty. I think there will be at least three wives. Unfortunately, even though we cleared both our schedules 9 months ago, my wife had something come up she could not get out of so will not be here. She really hates missing it. But my daughter will be here in her stead, thank goodness, helping out with the food and such.

I have not worried too much about the numbers because we can handle anything from 1 to 100. I think my wife fixed enough pulled pork and pulled chicken to feed an army. What we do not eat she has plans for the leftovers. She loves to cook and has helped with numerous catering events and is pretty darn good at it.

If I recall correctly both of the events I attended in Texas at Highflyers place ranged around 15 to 25 people and I would expect something similar. I think there has been about a dozen indicated attending so far and I hope some more will decide to come in this next week.

By all means, spouses are welcome and encouraged to come. We have an air conditioned sun room overlooking the main pond and activities should they get tired of listening to "pond stuff".

What to bring:

Yourself is the most important. Everything else is optional. Anytime after 9am. Lunch at noon and the party stops when the last person leaves or it gets dark (which ever comes first).

Your spouse or significant other is most welcome to come, even if they are not an avid pondmeister themselves. Inside air conditioned viewing if they get tired of hearing about "pond stuff".

If you want to bring something to share to eat at lunch that is fine but do not feel obligated to do so if it is inconvenient. The menu for lunch is pulled pork and pulled chicken, buns and fixins, with a side dish of mac and cheese. Cookies and Texas coco cake for desert. So if you want to bring something, bring something complimentary to those foods. Bottled pop and bottled tea (diet and regular) along with bottled water will be supplied to drink. If you want beer bring your own. All I ask is that you consume responsibly if you do.

In case of rain might want some rubber boots. We have all weather roads around three of the ponds and room to get in out of the rain for lunch so unless it just pours down rain, a little wet will not stop the party. But rubber boots to keep the grass from getting your feet wet around the pond would be good should the weather become inclimate. Should have a better idea of the weather and I will post the forecast a couple days before. Weather forecast Pittsburg, Kansas

Lawn chairs. We have a number of folding chairs so if you forget don't sweat it. But your own canvas folding chairs are probably a lot more comfortable.

Anything you might want to share with other pondmeisters in the way of projects, fishing, etc. I know Highflyer is planning on bringing his low power solar aeration creation and DO meter to demonstrate. I have a small cast net I can embarrass myself demonstrating and anyone can give it a try if they want. So if you have something you think others might be interested in, by all means bring it.

Fishing gear. I've got some home made cane poles you are welcome to use but I suggest you bring your own gear. I would really like people to show me the fish I am not catching. grin Get some good anglers that can show me what is really out there. Weather has moderated and water has cooled some and the water condition looks good. No live bait brought in from outside please (other than worms) but if you want to fish with live bait I have a cast net, minnow bucket and a forage pond full of GSH.

I'm going to ask people to take pictures. If you see a good shot of the gathering or somebody catches a memorable fish or anything interesting take a picture with your phone. At the event I will post my phone number and email address. Snap a picture and send it to me and then I can post some good pictures here on the forum later. I will try and remember to take some but if you all will help, the results will be much better.

All I can think of for now.

Edit: directions to my place link to an earlier post in this thread. Or if you are coming in from Joplin Missouri on 171 hwy this post gives those directions

Wish I could make it. My regrets

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Wish you could too Dave but I understand that it is a long and expensive travel for many. I do not expect a huge crowd. If I have as many as Highflyer gets at his gatherings I will be tickled pink. I mostly just want it so anyone who can and wants to come is welcome and knows about it.

I will definitely be there. If we can get a good idea of numbers, I'll bring along some Pond Boss swag. We've got a few hats and other stuff. Plus, if anyone wants to hold court and talk about your ponds, I'll be up for that, too.

Mike Otto is trying to figure out if he can come or not. Will know by Wednesday.

Looking forward to it.

Good to hear from you this morning Bob! You caught me by surprise. I was doing some field work in a big tractor, which I don't do that much of any more.

You ask me if I had everything ready to go and as far as I know I do. I fed the fish this morning and they seemed to be excited about it. Ponds are mowed around and gussied up. My wife is doing the yoemans work with the food preperation and all and she has that lined out. We have some name tags to associate the handles we are used to hearing on the forum with real names.

My wife, bless her heart, tied up a bunch of fishing flies thinking of what George Glazener did for Highflyers event, and has them on cards to give to each attendee.

We just need attendance! I was going to tell everyone you would be here but you beat me to it.

This is your chance, everybody within driving distance, to pick the brain of the Pond Boss himself. Or just good natured harrasment if you prefer.

I'm looking forward to it and I'm kind of an anti-social kind of guy. For normal people it should be lots of fun. grin

I'm afraid Cathy and I will be unable to come now...We are closing on a home Friday, and the long drives both ways would be tough. We'd originally planned to vacation in Branson this coming weekend and that is a bust also now.

I would really like to be able to be there and meet some other pond people that have the same type of water passions as I do. This weekend is the Hockett memorial race in Wheatland Missouri. Jesse was my cousin and we raced together and I volunteered to help out. The weather forecast looks like rain so who knows what will happen. If anyone is a sprint car fan, this is a don’t miss show. There will be around 80 non-wing Powr-I cars and at least 50 national ASCS wing cars, 3 day show with final on Saturday night. Lucas speedway is the nicest dirt track facility in the country. It is about 2 hours from John’s place. I hope I can make it to the gathering, my pit is only about 50 miles north.
Thanks, John King

I know this does not account for much, but count me in for a "definite MAYBE".

My original plan was to make a weekend out of it (friends, hotel, racetrack, etc) and my work and my wife's has stopped that (I've had to travel to Texas for work and my wife cannot get time off friday). I hope to be back in time to do the one day trip...we'll see.

Well I hope you can make it QA but if not stop by some other time. 69 hwy goes straight to Texas from here so just make a detour to or from work!

Here is the latest image on Google Earth. The address is 8042 KS-171, Pittsburg, KS.

The pond being built is the RES/SMB pond that is completed and has fish in it. The dozer in the picture would be me working at the time.

I just noticed there is something really weird about the image. It must be two different times merged. Notice on the upper part of the picture the fields are in wheat (very green fields) but in the lower part it shows bare ground I assume as it was prepared to plant wheat. That would have been something like a month apart or more. Very weird!

For anyone interested here are some threads pertaining to the individual ponds listed in the post above. The threads are long and I do not expect anyone to slug through all of them, but if anyone has questions these threads cover the individual ponds.

Thread on main pond and old refurbished pond

Forage pond

Sediment pond

RES/SMB pond

My name is Heath Lawrence, you met me and my father whenever you and Bob Lusk came over to my strip pit, which is about 10 miles north of your place. I seen a reminder from Bob Lusk about your party and was going to let you know that me and my dad plan to come. I'm very excited to see your ponds and be around other pondmiesters!

Fantastic! My wife had just ask me the other day if you were coming and I told her I had no idea. I could not remember your name (but I did remember you when we met again at the farm store in Lamar) and I am so glad Bob thought to invite you.

My powers of observation and remembering names is highly lacking. I'll try to do better at that Heath (I have a grandson named Heath, should be able to remember it).

So glad you are coming. And just this morning the weather forecast looks to be a lot better than it was. They have moved the rain chances to Friday and away from Saturday. Yes!!!!!

Due to some event going on in Pittsburg the motel situation is not good. High prices because of the event. So I do not expect anyone to be staying in Pittsburg (I think Bob Lusk was going to stay in Baxter Springs and Bing maybe in Joplin). But just in case anyone is around I will still be having dinner at Chicken Annie's Annex south of Pittsburg at 6pm Friday night. So if anyone happens to be in town or close and wants to join me, send me a PM or just meet me there. I'll be wearing a Pond Boss cap.

Snrub: I am very sorry but we will not be able to attend. A very good musician friend who was performing in Branson had a gall bladder attack and it had to be removed by surgery rather than the lapro method. We are staying behind to help Jimmy and his wife, good luck with your meeting. It looks like the weather gods are favoring you.

You are welcome.

I enjoyed it very much. I think everyone appreciated Bob Lusk being there and answering all the questions ask.

I will try and get some of the pictures together in the next couple days and post them.

I would have liked to have come. So happy to hear the weather was great and all had a great time. I'm looking forward to the photos documenting the event.

What a great time! John and Carolynn did a great job preparing for and hosting this event.
John's ponds are fascinating. He's got a variety of fun ponds full of fish.

A little housekeeping...I had a box of Pond Boss swag and forgot to leave it there. For those of you who attended, private message me your addresses and I'll send it.

It was a great event. Thanks to Bob Lusk for making the trip up and fielding all the pond questions everybody had. Bob was busy in a number of very interesting discussions at about every moment he was here. I know I got questions answered about my bushy pond weed and he gave me tips for better hybrid identification. Way too many discussions for me to recall what they were all about but about every step around the different ponds raised new questions and discussions. Everybody that attended had the chance to get burning questions answered.

Some pictures below. I did a lousy job documenting the event but thankfully Bob and my daughter also took some shots so you can get a flavor of what was going on.

Attendees: don't forget to send Bob a PM private message with your address so he can send you some free stuff he forgot to leave at the get together.

I'm the guy with the long crappie pole. I pulled out dozens of BG and hybrids. One BG was about a pound, plus caught a CC about 2 lbs, which was a big fight on that limber pole and tiny jig.

A pound? And no picture??? laugh

That would have been a pond record for me. My BG are plentiful but not especially large. frown

I'm glad you caught it. Now at least I know there is one out there.

Attendee's, don't forget to send Bob a pm with your address so he can send you some goodies. He had them in his truck and forget to leave them for us.

A little more housekeeping. Dustin at Optimal Fish Food sent me an overnight package of goodies to give out. Well over night in rural Kansas means the first of the week if it is sent on Friday. So I got the package Monday, after the event was long over. I was supposed to remind him of the event a week or two ahead and it slipped my mind. My bad.

Here is the deal, Send Dustin a PM with your name and address: Optimal Fish Food Dustin

And he will send you out something in the mail. Trust me, you want what he has to give you.

I just wanted to say I had a great time at your get together John. Your ponds were very nice, manicured to perfection! All the work you put into them shows, and I'm glad you recorded all the information about them in detail for us to read on the forum. I was also very happy that Bob Lusk was there to answer our questions and share his vast knowledge. Thank you very much John for hosting the event.

While I was at your party I forgot to show you my throw net ring. It is made by ProKast and it is called the Perfect Circle Net Thrower. It's a blue ring you place in your throw net to help you throw perfect circles every time. I believe it's available threw Bass Pro. I was just going to tell you about it because it helped me to significantly throw better casts everytime with my throw net.

Yes, I caught it while you were out on the ATV showing your ponds. Probably about 10 AM. It was about a 10 incher. Biggest BG I have caught in a long time.

That is cool. Never heard or seen such a thing.

The biggest thing I have noticed to mess up a throw is if the rope catches the lead line. Almost a sure taco. I have discovered it is very important to coil the rope a certain way and consistently. Sometimes I was just wadding it up and invariably when I did the rope would catch the lead line. I wonder if maybe that blue ring helps with that?

Don't forget to do a PM to Bob and Dustin (Optimal) with your address so they can send you some stuff. Well worth your time. Dustin has made some very generous promotional gifts for the get together.

I have caught a 10" hybrid before but a 10" pure BG would be bigger. Cool.

I found the blue ring to mainly just help you cast the net in a perfect circle everytime. I bought it when I was a young teenager and had difficulties throwing a throw net without it "tacoing" everytime. I still have to hold the lead line neatly coiled as you mentioned though.

First off, a big huge Thank You to John and family. I am a frequent reader of the forum but not a real frequent poster. As such, I was more or less a complete stranger, nothing more than a nickname on a forum, and you welcomed me into your home. I had wonderful time chatting with and listening to everyone and just absorbing all the different things everyone is doing with their ponds. It's not everyday that I get to be around people as "pond crazy" as me.
Thanks again to all!
