I stocked my 1 acre 16 ft deep pond with brown trout. During the winter here it gets very cold and the pond can get up to 3 feet or more of ice. I don’t believe there is any inflow or outflow during the winter. Will the 80 trout survive? It also can get multiple feet of snow on the Ice. The freeze over can lasts multiple months

Thanks

Without aeration, the more snow you can keep off the ice the better the chances the trout will survive. Allowing light to penetrate the ice will allow phytoplankton to create oxygen for trout survival. A fellow PB member in Manitobia kept trout alive all winter by keeping snow cover to a minimum.
See information in this link for a trout pond in Canada. http://forums.pondboss.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=14308

Thanks for the reply. I read some of the link and it is helpful. It is shoveled off once a week because we skate on it. Of course only a bit of the pond is shoveled because otherwise it would be to time consuming.

Thanks

What other, if any, forage fish species did you stock for the trout? As Cody noted above, oxygen is needed from sunlight penetration, so clear ice, or flooding the surface after icing over can help with ice clarity and snow melting...just use a trash pump to flood the surface with pond water.

After Oxygen/sunlight, the trout will need food....

I do apologize for the very late response. It is a very well established pond so I did not stock any other species. The food source is various bugs, leeches and many minnows.

The ice is also flooded in the way you mentioned one a week for skating.

For a ice-snow covered pond to get enough sunlight penetration to make DO,, around 20%-30% of the snow needs to be regularly removed. Snow removal of 10% may work for ponds with deeper depths. With sunny days that should allow enough DO production to keep trout alive assuming not a lot of organic decay occurs in the pond. I get concerned about loss of DO after 3-4 weeks of deep snow cover. This depends a lot on pond depth and biochemical oxygen demand.
The longer snow lies on the ice the lower the DO concentration becomes. DO loss begins at the bottom and slowly 'works its way' toward the surface.

Yeah its 16 feet deep everywhere so it is pretty deep. Also I know this is a silly question but can you fish for trout through ice in a pond?

Trout perform very well while ice fishing? You will have lots of fun and excitement doing that this winter. See if you can get a picture of your ice fishing catch for us. It will be interesting to see what bait works best for your wintertime trout. If you feed pellets get some artificial pellets from Stubby Steve and catching trout will be relatively easy. Another option is to soften some high protein fish food so it has the consistency of cookie or pie dough. Roll it into to small balls. Use it to bait the trout and also catch them. It won't stay on the hook long but it works great.

Ice fishing for trout is quite popular here in western states. I'm most familiar with it on the larger reservoirs of Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado.

Jigging with a variety of small, flashy spoons or "ice flies" tipped with a tiny piece of bait can be a good way to start.

Trout aren't necessarily down deep. We often hook them 1 to 4 feet under the ice when fishing over much deeper water. That would be the coldest water in the lake!

Another thing to keep in mind is to try just as the ice is going off in spring. We'll sometimes have luck casting onto the edge of the melting ice. We get a hookup right after our lure slides into the water.

Ice fishing my pond is the complete pits. In 8 years I have yet to land a fish through the ice. YP, LMB, RBT, GSF; none of them bite anything I've tried. Oh well.

Thanks for the info. Interesting you can never catch fish through the ice

I fished at private pond in Montana back in 2011 that was stocked with rainbows and brookies. We were there in January and there was over 18" of ice on the pond at that time - the place was incredible. Very active and lively fish for a relatively small (2 acre) dammed creek. They ran no aeration. There were a ton of fun to catch and a nice alternative to the norm around here
