I have a 3-4 acre pond that we are digging out to make it deeper and using the dirt to increase the height of the dam. what are the main things i should do before filling it up? Lime? plant? Structure? any helpful links or info will help

Structure makes sense at this stage. Plants can wait until Spring. Did the water need lime prior to redoing it? I would wait until it fills and then, after a short time, check water quality.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

I too have a 3/4 to 1 acre pond and the one thing to remember is when it comes to structure as Bob Lusk always says you want to try and make a structure type highway. Make sure your structure where ever you put it is close enough to go from one to the next without the fish feeling uptight about it so to speak. For example.

I have3 brush piles near the shore on my back side of the pond between them is only about 20 feet apart. Good enough so you can cast and fish but close enough where the fish can go from one pile to the next and not feel to worried about doing so. I have like 4 different spots like that and then I have one brush pile out deeper near the middle but not in the middle I would say about 50 feet in from middle of pond. My bigger BG and bass really like that one too. Course it works for me well because I have my floating feeder about 20 feet from it and then my dock is near by also so without trying I kinda made a hwy on accident.. lol.

Anyhow I think your doing the right thing putting the lime in ahead of time if you need it it's a whole lot easier getting it in there now versus with a full pond.

Good Luck

Put in as much lime as the trucks can bring. For example if it takes 2 trucks to deliver lime and they can bring 10 tons each then get 20 tons not 15 (if you were ordering 15). No reason to pay for delivery of a half full truck. A few extra tons of ag lime will only help. If test suggested 5 tons per acre and your lake is 4 acres then add at least 20 tons.

When you lime in low alkalinity soils you will have to lime every 2-3 yrs to maintain good alkalinity for plankton blooms.

All the more reason to add extra lime while the water is down.
