Caught them both on a small jig. Bass barely let it hit the water. Both very healthy. Tried to weigh them but failed. Will use better scale next time.

Nice healthy looking fish! I am envious as my pond will be stocked next year and probably will not throw a hook in until 2019.

Thanks quarter acre. Anyone else think that SF looks like a HBG?

I don't think so looks more like a GSF to me? But I am no expert....

RC

Here is a green sunfish I caught on my pond a few years ago. Now put your fish next to it it sure looks a lot the same mine is a bit darker but I think it's because it's a little older.

I'd agree RC51. I am just amazed at the size of it. That is the biggest GSF I've ever seen.

It is interesting to note that the GSF has grown 1.5 inches from stocking and the LMB has grown 2.25 inches from stocking which was in mid October.

OH yeah they can get big. The one in my pic there is laying on a 13 inch cooler top. So that will tell ya how big they can get.

I think the sunfish look more like some kind of hybrid or cross, and not so much a green sunfish (GSF).

Congratulations on the pond!!

Thanks sunil! Do you think it could be a PS×GSF hybrid and that is why it looks strange?

I think the orange edge to the gill flap says Pumpkinseed, and the rest looks like Hybrid.

Not sure I see the Green Sunfish, but I'm no expert.

I think it is a PS×GSF hybrid. I'd you look at the other picture i posted you'll see a purebred PS. The hybrid has the ear tab of a PS but the tail of a GSF.

First fish IMO is a HBG.
Third fish id is a challenge.
What all is in the pond ?

From WiscFish - go see all the species and hybrids excellent resource

PS X GSF

PS X GSF

You guess vs fish 3 bottom

Ewest it's a little scary but i don't know. I stocked 30 pure northern strain LMB all similar size. I stocked 20 CC and have seen them (1) since. But the 350 BG i ordered between 3-4 inches turned into a "bottom of the barrel" mix of BG GSF PS and as we've seen hybrids between 1-6 inches. I'm a bit angry, but happy that i got PS (which I wanted) and some larger fish. I will most likely be spending the better part of the next 2 summers fishing out the GSF which i won't mind. The fish are growing good and that's what matters.

They should be ok over time as long as you got enough pure BG. They will try to segregate via mating. If you catch any that you think are PS crosses then please check to see if they have pharyngeal teeth/plates. That will determine how well they can eat snails. Take pics.

We're back! Slayed them today, 5 fish not counting the ones I lost due to using a barbless hook. All fish minimally handled and returned quickly. Pond best caught, 8.5 inches. 2 look similar but I'm calling them different fish.

I'd appreciate help identifying any hybrids.

Fish exhibiting extreme growth making me very happy.

Hey dragon, were you down here in Arkansas fishing on my pond!?!? lol. Looks like ours. Those greenies will fight! Were there a couple HBG in there maybe? I'm throwing my really non-anything close to expert opinion in.

1. HBG with heavy GSF traits
2. GSF
3. HBG
4. GSF or HBG Edited after looked again. I see the light color on the edges
5. HBG

These are guesses as I am learning. Wanted to throw them out there before the true identities get put out.

Looks great...we should watch the next year or so and see who can grow the biggest GSF!

I'd agree with your guesses. I thought most were HBG( grr that's not what the hatchery said).

I like the first pic for a "true" greenie. The others show HBG markers to my eyes.

True greenie....that's funny.

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

Went back for some bass. Was not disappointed! New pond best 10.5 inches!!! Stocked at 4-6 inches, that's at least 4.5 inches of growth since October! Wow!!

WOW! Another successful day of fishing!
Caught a CC on a little orange jig, which I didn't believe would happen. Nice bass and big GSF.

Finally found the elusive pure bred BG. Happy to see they are in there.

Post at 5:04 #5 pic was a HBG. It should be another 1" to 1.5" longer next year and its growth may outpace that of the BG for the next year or two.

I believe it! It has already put on at least 2.5 inches since stocking(noted in signature).

When I first started I never thought I would have fish this big this quick. I was hoping for 8 inch BG in 2 years and I've surpassed that in 1.

Thanks for all the help guys, never would have gotten here without pondboss.
