I see the chart Eric provides and I never go against anyone's data or charts but this chart says it's normal fish production range for PH is up to 9.0 I've had aquariums all my life and never ever have I had my PH over 8 unless I had some kind of African type cichlid fish. Not saying it's wrong I guess but to me that's just way to high. As a matter of fact I think Wild fish such as Bass and BG and such do a bit better in lower PH then higher. All my fish seem to be thriving in 6.6 to 6.8 ish PH. I and this is just me would be freaking out if my PH was pushing 9!!!

My pond is close to the same PH (a LOT of calcium!), very hard, with no problems. Fish seem to love it, but so does the Chara.

Something else is going on.

There may be but not saying that there isn't but that high of PH is not good with the way PH swings what if he is going over 9 to 9.2 or 9.4 your fish will/could start to get what's called alkalosis. Guess I'm just a little OCD about high PH I have seen how fish will react to it.

And although I'm not trying to be nit picky here, but when it comes to PH being close to 8.7 and being 8.7 can make a big difference. It's kind of like saying I'm out of D.O. or I am almost out of D.O. well maybe not quite that bad... but 8.5 instead of 8.7 or 8.8 can be a difference maker is all I'm saying.

Here is a quick note to take a look at.

If the pH is too high, the fish will produce excess slime, and will gasp at the surface. Losses can be major. "Alkalosis" is hard to reverse once it occurs.

On the other hand, Acidosis is rapidly corrected once the pH is brought up to a suitable range.

IMPORTANT: pH contributes to the toxicity of Ammonia.

At higher pH values, ammonia is more toxic.

Below pH 7.2 most Ammonia is ionized to "Ammonium" and is far less toxic.
