Actually it's for my oldest to deer hunt with. Being ARMY and all he is actually really good with this AR... and you never know when the occasional hog just may come strolling by...

Very Nice RC! Make sure you get some ear plugs too. Those things are about as loud as they get. Not just uncomfortably loud, but "I sure wish I hadn't done that LOUD". Don't ask how I know. Mine has been equipped with a suppressor since which allows me to enjoy the sounds of nature while hunting. I still use the plugs when target practicing though. Stupid loud.
I had to adjust the sights when I put the can on. At fifty yards the difference was about an inch IIRC. So, yes it affected my POI. I do not shoot without it so it's not an issue. With that said, my sights are red dot co-witnessed with the irons. I'm no sharp shooter either way.
Quarter Acre, shooting it with the suppressor on and off change the point of impact at all?
RC, what caliber and what bullets is he planning on using for hunting?
It's a Windham .223/.556 carbon fiber barrel shooting 64 grain Winchester out of it. 3020 fps out of the muzzle.
I did see how ever Federal makes a Nossler Ballistic tip in a .223 I love that bullet it's sweet!! I have some for my .270 and wont use anything else.
We got to take it out and play with it some... Quarter thanks for the tip on the ear plugs... will get some!
Everyone was afraid of the carbon fiber barrel not being able to hold up but I knew it would. When it comes to heat carbon fiber will eat it up and spit it out back at you it's unreal how well it can take heat on! And of course I am not jamming 400 rounds through it in 10 minutes either... lol

RC, Consider a 10 or 20 round magazine. You will not shoot 30 rounds through that barrel in any one event. The shorter magazine will give him a better hold.
For hogs, using a 223, I really like 77grains if the twist of the barrel will support them.

HF I did purchase a 10 round mag for sure!! We cant deer hunt here with the 30 anyway they won't let us. Max you can have is 10. Thanks for the tip though.

I wouldn't use the BT in that for deer or hogs, I don't think it will hold up enough to get good penetration. If you are strictly head shooting them, then it doesn't matter. BUT, if shooting them in the body, I'd look for something that was constructed more solidly, like the Barnes TSX bullet.
My concern for the BT in that caliber is that it's not heavy enough to retain a lot of weight for body shots at high impact velocities.
Pat, what's the impact velocity? That has a lot to do with how the bullet performs. Too fast and it acts like a varmint bullet, exploding to pieces and not getting a lot of penetration. The bullet manufacturers have design parameters that they design the bullet around. Impact velocity too fast and they blow up, too slow and they pencil right through. Barnes TSX bullets that I've looked at tend to not expand at impact velocities under 1,800 fps. I'm not sure on the TTSX bullets.
I shot a whitetail in the lungs at 100 yds with a 115g .25 cal BT in my .257 Wby. Impact velocity was a hair under 2990 fps according to my ballistic program. The bullet slipped between 2 ribs and blew up in the lungs. No exit. The deer ran 90 yds before collapsing, but since the bullet entered high in the lungs there was no blood trail except for the last 10 yards.
Luckily I was able to watch the deer from bullet impact until it fell down. If it was in heavy cover, I don't know if I would have recovered the deer. If I would have hit in the shoulder, I don't know if the bullet would have penetrated past the shoulder blade. I have since switched to either a 115g Barnes for under 300 yds in that gun or a custom bonded bullet in 125 - 130 grain weights for longer shots (much better bc).
Another case in pushing a bullet too fast was shooting the 175g Sierra Matchkings in my 7mm Allen Magnum. Once the throat roughened up a little after 200 rounds were sent down the tube, the bullets were blowing up in mid-air at about the 50 yd. mark. I called Sierra and after the 3rd phone call the tech said "Wait a minute, HOW fast did you say they were going?" When I told him (the sweet spot for accuracy was 3.495 fps) he said "Just what the he.. are you shooting them out of? We've never shot them over 2,900 fps." When I told him, he said I was in uncharted territory and what he thought was happening was the jacket was getting a hair thinner due to the roughness of the throat and the RPM's was pulling the bullet apart at around the 50 yd. mark.
I switched to 180 Berger VLD bullets & the sweet spot was about 50 fps slower for those and I haven't had any bullet "poofs" since then.
Hey HF it's 1 to 9 so I can go up to 77 grain from what I have been told. I currently have some good old Winchester 64 grain I'm gonna try out in it. They are not BT but they are coming out at 3020 fps. I cant remember what it is at 100 yards I would have to re look on the box.

Esshup Probably around 3000 fps maybe more, most of my shots are inside of 100 yds. Fps starts between 3300-3400. Have killed tons of hogs shot through shoulder and none ran off. Have lost one hog shot behind ear.....
Pat, that's good to know. Maybe that one deer was a fluke.
They legalized all CF rifles .243 cal and up for deer this year here in Indiana, so I might just drag the .257 out again and give it another try with the 115g NBT's.
Guess were gonna find out how good this AR is with deer. My son can shoot and take apart and put back together this gun with his eyes closed. He qualified 28 out of 30 at 300 meters 3 different times now with the .556 with iron sites. Oh to have eyes like that again!! I am not sure what "qualified" consists of as far as pattern goes but if he can do that with iron sites at 300 meters the 3x9 scope with lighted cross hairs should be a walk in the park at 100 or 150. Will see. I definitely will let you all know how he / it performs when it's time to pull the trigger.

I practice by taking a single shot at a target each day with the bow. Everyone I know can outshoot me at target with multi-shot groups but I have way more trophy antlers hanging on the wall. I shoot a single shot before each season with the 44 at a hundred yards and make sure my scope is on. My biggest trophies were taken with a bow at 5 yards, and with a gun at 20 yards. I have always been lucky hunting though. Pressure has always made me perform above my skill level. Took 3 in rapid succession with the bolt-action out of a herd of 4 at 80 yards last year, but that was due to frustration from noisy neighbors with atv's. Put me out of business till late archery due to limits so was really not a plus for me.
