If you had to choose between Signal Crayfish and Louisiana Swamp Crayfish, which would you select as forage for LMB?

Which would you select as a food source for humans? I love crayfish, and would love to harvest them from my pond.

Can you import and stock the Red Swamp? Where can you source the Signal Crayfish?

I'm not sure that having LMB and harvestable numbers of crayfish is a compatible option...

Crawfish can only be a forage add on for LMB. They will not last as the long term main/major forage base for LMB.

Do your largemouth bass represent a breeding population? If not, then how many bass per acre?

Scott, would you say the same for SMB? I get the impression crawfish are more central to their diet than LMB, but not sure.

I have SMB in my pond that are doing very will and I don't think I have a crayfish left.

I think that if forage fish of the correct size for the predator fish are in abundance, the SMB will do just fine without the crayfish.

esshup, in California there are a number of farms that provide both Crayfish. You can view the list by going to https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=3265&inline

Will the bass be breeding? If so, then they will knock the crayfish forage base down to level where it is not significant even if crayfish population persists. If you have a mono-sex population of females or males only, then all sorts of doors open to make so crayfish population remains abundant while still providing excellent forage for the bass. You may even be in a situation where habitat modification may be needed to make so crayfish do not self limit at levels below what you need to support good bass growth. Part of that will be promoting quality forage for crayfish themselves.

A mono sex fishery is extremely hard to establish and keep. Most times even the fisheries science experts slip up and let the other sex through sorting or someone helps and lots of babies show up. It can be done but its not easy to get right and maintain.

I was asking since not knowing level of control OP had with bass stock involved. I am one of them and can go mono-sex assuming fish large enough to sex reliably.

Thanks!

I'll bet that it will take a lot of phone calls and not all of the listed places have what you want.

For instance, unless things have changed, the Santa Anny River Lakes in Riverside County are "pay to fish" lakes, you couldn't go there and buy live fish to take home to stock your ponds. At least it was that way when I lived in Ca.

They were known for large Catfish and Trout for people to catch.

That's still true. I fished there two years ago. But only the catfish are big.

One good reliable mono-sex predator to use in ponds is the hybrid striped bass. IMO the HSB, since it is primarily an open water foraging species, it would not be a major predator of bottom dwelling crayfish. It would be a fairly easy, simple, and interesting combination to explore.
