My 7 year old daughter has become very keen at knowing if a fish is a GSF or a BG. We have been removing GSF for the last year every time we fished. Well about a month ago I decided we would embrace the GSF and maybe add some more BG at a later date. They are VERY plentiful, we have all sizes, they are easy and fun for kids to catch.
Last night she came in our room and hopped up on the bed and asked us if we knew what she wanted on her birthday cake next year. We asked her if it was a horse...she said no...unicorn...she said no...a cow...she said no...she loves animals by the way...so jokingly I ask "A green sunfish!?!?" She looked at me with big eyes and said YES!! Thats it!! My wife and I died laughing. My wife asked her, well what about a crappie or a bass or something. She said no, green sunfish. We finally talked her into a bass, or a little girl fishing on a pond. I feel this is not the end of this conversation...lol. For all the ill feelings towards the GSF and all we do to try to rid or avoid them, there is a little girl in Arkansas with a soft heart for them...even wanted them to be part of her birthday!
Thought this would get a smile from most. lol

Yeah, she loves it. She will bait her own hook, normally take the fish off the hook unless they swallow it, and wants to put EVERYONES fish back in the water. She likes to do the slow, watch them swim away release...she is a twin and her sister won't put on a worm, touch a fish, but does like to fish, as long as she is catching something. lol
Brian, she may just do it! I will post a pic if she does, although their birthday isn't until Feb. lol

For the daughter that won't touch them, get a pair of small nurse gloves for her. It has worked for everyone but my Wife. And, sometimes she will do it.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

We have worked on it. She isn't afraid of them anymore. She has held them on occasion. The gloves are a good idea though. Would probably make her feel better about it. She just doesn't like to get her hands dirty.

LOL great story! I have GSF and agree they are easy to catch and fun for kids. I take a big clear plastic jug when I fish with kids. We put the fish in the jug so the kids can look them over and then release them. One of my grand kids caught a bullhead once and said "look at him he's adorable I'm going to name him Floaty" So to some kids even Bullheads are adorable. Every one we catch now is called a floaty.

There used to be a sketchy sub-group on the forum called the "GSA."
It stood for "Green Sunfish Association."
"You'll not find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy...." - or something like that....

Well, the GSF girl went with Papa and caught a nice bass on their pond last night. lol. Her sister stayed with me and helped me building some fence. Got close to time for the feeder to go off so I took her to the pond. It was raining so for whatever reason the fish were turned off. She did catch one though...an 8" GSF. She was happy...but daddy took the fish off. As soon as she caught it she daddy look how big it is!! Before I could get a word out she said real quick, "I don't want to touch it!" lol
Dave, the girls and I would like to join. Is there room for 3 more members? Is there any hazing or anything? Maybe to prove loyalty you have to place a couple GSF in your pond and video them as they swim away?? Something like that? lol
I've always thought of myself as being a bet sketchy!

And Yolk gets yet another black mark beside his name in the Book of Lepomis. It's not looking good, as I've already used up two Sharpies and half a crayon on his page alone.
"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"
If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1) And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1) Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT? PB answer: It depends.
