Hi All,
I'm trying to decide if I should rebuild my aeration pump or buy a new one. What I currently have is a Grovehac 0523-101-G588DX s/n 0807619912. In researching this it looks like it is a Gast part number. I'm assuming that Gast bought out part of Grovhac. Anyways, I have no idea how old it is. It was installed before I bought the property. Typically it is only run at night but recently I started running 24/7 to try to get my bacteria going again. So now running it in the daytime the noise is annoying. The pump does not have internal filters like the new Gast pumps. So all I can do is replace the vanes. Would it make sense to add glass mufflers and replace the vanes or should I just look for a new quieter pump?

Thanks

What is on there now to muffle the air going into the pump?

Is the noise from the compressor vanes, the air that is moved by the compressor or from the bearings in the electric motor?

If you have no air filter on the inlet side, that will need to be addressed if you rebuild it.

It looks like a rebuild kit for the vanes runs around $80 when you figure in shipping, and it will take an hour or so depending on how "plug and play" the new vanes are, and how long it takes you to get the compressor apart.

Thanks for the reply.

The input side of the compressor has a foam air filter. The output goes through a metal muffler that is then attached to the hose.

The noise does not sound like bearings going bad but lower pitched from the compression of the air.

I have seen some input filters that have the filter inside of a glass jar and wondered if they would reduce the noise.

The pump is inside a vented metal enclosure that looks like it was made for this pump. It should be easy to disassemble the pump end but I didn't want to do it without having the new vanes on hand.

I did notice that Gast doesn't offer a new gasket for this model pump. Could it be that it doesn't have a gasket?

Thanks again.

As you suspect you have one of the old style 0523 models that made about 3 times more noise than the 0523 with the quiet running head. This model does not use a gasket for the rebuild. The new 0523's still do not use a gasket between face plate and rotor housing. Gasket is for the quiet running head. If you have trouble finding just the 4 vanes contact me. If you can find an old junk 0523 with quiet air chamber head I think you could convert your current pump to quiet running mode.

Thanks Bill. I have found the vanes that I need and I'll keep an eye out for a scrapped 0523.
