I noticed today that something is pulling up the cattails in the pond. I know muskrats will do that, but have not had any signs of any around. Is it possible the channel cats are up to it? I have some that are about three years old now and over 24", might they do it? Thanks for what ever you can add to the story!

I doubt the catfish are doing it. Muskrats and other 4 legged creatures would be my guess. Muskrats can be really sneaky, I've seen them make entrances to their underground dens only about a foot long, not the usual long "runs" that most people are used to seeing.

Are the cattail uprooted with some roots attached or just cut off stems /tops?

it looks like the cattails are being eaten, there are some roots floating where and there, and others have all the root on them. I have looked for some sign of muskrats and have not seen even a slight sign. Our drain ditch that runs the south property line has been dry for more than a month, if there were any they should have moved on to the larger ditches, ours is only about 18 inches deep when full.
