Good day folks, We just dug out a new pond and hoping to have some fish in there. Wanted to do things right, so after digging the spot, we got the aerator windmill installed this week and now working on my fishing deck. Once this is done, I will fill the hole with water. The location is Southern Alberta - Canada - Just above Montana - an hour from Glacier National Park and 30 mins from Waterton International Peace Park. Just wondering - if you good folks have any advise on what kind of fish can I start with and how many should I put in the pond. Also, I have some Koi - at home in a smaller pond that I take inside in the winter, but planning to put them in the large pond - Is there any danger to them becoming food for the other fish. Also, I will be adding the Koenders pond conditioner right away when I get the water in, to start the maintenance process. Any thoughts on anything at all - Pond/Deck/Fish etc you can share is appreciated. Vijay
Howdy. I am no expert, but curious.. heh.. what other fish were ya planning to add, i.e. you have a fishing deck so assuming you plan to fish said fishing deck
I personally would not add the Koi to the fishing pond, if so, only one. It seems that popular opinion is that they can overpopulate and stir up the water a lot making it muddy. Many people have them in there larger ponds and are good with it, but there has been a lot of effort for some folks to get them out of their fishing/swimming ponds.
As far as the danger of them getting eaten?... there is a golden rule of thumb for that...
If the smaller fish can fit in the larger fish's mouth, the larger fish will eat it.
I can't help you with your stocking plan because I'm too green in the pond world and our climates differ quite a bit. One of the first questions you'll get from the experts here is...What are your goals for the pond? Do you want to raise the fish for table fare (and how much time/money are you willing to put into it)? Do you want to catch trophy fish? OR just have fun catching fish with the kids? The questions are numerous. These are just the first to come to mind.
If the smaller fish can fit in the larger fishes mouth, the larger fish will eat it.
I laughed out loud when I read that...I think it will be my new signature!! Good one quarter!
Welcome!! You are in the right place, and as has already been said, the experts will chime in soon! Thats a cool project. Did you add the rocks all around it? I'd love to have a few loads of those! Where will the waterline be? I'm assuming towards the top of the rockline? You said you were going to fill it...whats your source?? Thats going to be alot of water.
Hope you keep the pictures going, I LOVE build threads!!
