I'd like to add some crayfish to my 1/3 acre pond. The most common local crayfish here in southeast South Carolina is the Eastern red swamp crayfish (Procambarus troglodytes). I've been unable to find much info about them so I'm turning to the more knowledgeable people here. The reason I'm looking at them is I've heard that papershells don't do well down here. I don't know how true that info is since they raise them in elsewhere where it's as hot as here.
Thanks in advance.

Papershells are not an aggressive species and can get easily displaced by other more aggressive species. Papershells also do not get a large as some of the more common southern crayfish species. As a species papershells are an adaptable species and can live in most waters providing they do not have to live and compete with a pushy more aggressive species. A large, aggressive, defensive specie of crayfish would do best with big sizes of bass.

Thanks for the response, Bill. All I have in the pond right now are HBG and FHM. Planning to add HSB and RES. What do you think? Stick with native or go with papershells?

What is going to be your predator species - only HSB? I may try adding YP and see how they do down here. Rex is talking about making a trip east. If he does, he'll bring some and I'll meet him in Georgia.
