Caught this one earlier this morning. About as far away from the gravel beds I built for SMB nesting, as you can get. She's, (if a she) seemed very round. So, I'm guessing she has eggs.
Throwing a little rattle shad luer out for the HSB (they still refuse to be caught)
Caught two SMB, both were pretty close to the bank. Also, had this sore spot by gill fin. Would that be due to nesting? Hope so, hope its not a disease..
Thanks,
Jeff

9 yr old pond, 1 ac, 15' deep.
RES, YP, GS, FHM (no longer), HBG (going away), SMB, and HSB (only one seen in 5 yrs) Restocked HSB (2020) Have seen one of these.
I think that's about all I should put in my little pond.

I have no idea. The fish was just so fat compared to other SMB I have been catching. Maybe it has just been gorging on all the RES, HBG, and YP fry..
Certainly the largest I've caught on this pond. Stocked 60 4-8" back in Oct of 2015.

You are right. I should have been thinking. Too late for a spawn. So now I wonder what the sore was? The SMB were down by the dam, on the north end of the pond. That's where I always see the GBH.. Maybe that's more of a wound than a sore.
Thx

It's late for smallie spawn, but maybe a female could still have some eggs?

Still, there really is no joy similar to having reproducing smallmouth.

Excerpt from Robert Crais' "The Monkey's Raincoat:"
"She took another microscopic bite of her sandwich, then pushed it away. Maybe she absorbed nutrients from her surroundings."
