Our pond was dug in Sept 2015. It is about a half acre kidney bean. During first winter it filled up during the final snow melt and thaw. Summer was dry and it slowly went down about half way. The soil type is Homewood Silt Loam and it is at the bottom of a valley with all drainage from over 20 acres funneling its way. This winter with no snow melt it has filled up about 3/4 but we of course would like it full. We are far from electricity but trying to find out info on alternate energy powered well pumps to help both top it off and add some clearer water. We have not asked local drillers yet but would like to learn more on the topic before contacting one. The pond is over 6 feet deep and an amphibian paradise. Thanks and we enjoy reading all the information found here.

Windmill power has supposedly come a long way but I know almost nothing about it. Anybody?

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

If Ohio was reliably windy that could be an option. Was first checking out how solar pumps are doing these days. Or we could hitch up our beagles and have them chase a rabbit around to generate some energy.

Check out the Koenders. It is my understanding that they need very little wind to turn.

FWIW I can offer this. Years ago an engineering buddy and I were playing around with wind power. Back then the rule of thumb was you need an average wind speed of 7 MPH to make wind power viable. I'm sure there are more recent studies and IMO that is where I would start. What is the average wind speed at your place and what do the more recent manufacturers say you need?

I do have an Acurite weather station and since I set it up last August our average wind speed has been a little over 5 mph on our hill top. I looked at the Koenders website and need to read more on the one wind powered pump they show. Now would like to do rough comparison with solar options.

IF you do decide to go with the Koenders system, make sure you get the tip kit for the windmill. A client has 2 of them and both need servicing, one has the tip kit, the other doesn't.

Double check on the cfm specs. Ask them the CFM at how many mph wind speed. I.E., if the wind is 5 mph how many cfm, 10 mph, how many cfm, etc.

Don't use 3/8" air line, go with 1/2"-5/8" i.d. line even if you have to buy it from someone else.

Where can we find information on solar power and water well pumps? Seems like we have plenty of sunshine.

That is a great site for solar info. I think we have enough now to first decide if we want to spend more on our pond and if we do how to make an informed decision. Ground water ponds seem to take some figuring out. I just retired from doing accounting for a large construction company and pond "boss" is a much more fun job.
