Going to the pond for a bass evaluation. Last 2 years I went in the summer heat and didn't catch any bass. Going to try it out this weekend and I need a plan. Pond is in central illinois. Anyone know what stage of the spawn we're in? Or any other reports. I wont be able to get back out there till July so i have to make the best of it

Hey Joey,
I'm up by Rockford and saw LMB on the nest in my pond yesterday. Might be done where you are further south.

joey....I am in west central Illinois (southern Macoupin county) and we killed them last weekend. Bass fishing was excellent as was the bluegill fishing. You should be able to get a very good idea of what you have in the pond.
Our water is still murky and stained from all the earlier rain. Even with polarized sunglasses on I did not see any beds. But, I believe the bluegill are on the beds now.
Maybe 6 weeks ago the water was in the 62-65 degree range and my thoughts were that the bass were spawning then. Temps dropped for a few weeks with all the cold rain but I was assuming the bass spawn was over. The water in our 3 ponds was in the 62-65 range last weekend.....so I guess it would not be out of the question that some bass are spawning late....weird weather/temperatures this spring and our water visibility has been terrible.
The bluegill were hammering mepps and small beetle spins and the bass were all over bigger spinner baits (dark or bright colors made zero difference)....we always prefer copper blades at our place due to a large number of golden shiners. We also caught quite a few bass on watermelon plastic lizards (Zoom).
We had a great day of fishing on Sunday (May 21) and my son has had another good day since then. I anticipate another good outing this weekend......I think you will have lots of success. Now is prime time for our part of the Midwest. Best of luck. BM61.

Update, no bass caught at all. Third year in a row. Kids caught some bg in the 2 to 3 inch range and a few adults in short periods of time. I tried all types of spinners, buzz baits, crankbaits, and a chatterbait in every inch of shoreline, dropoff, stump and fallen tree. Nothing. Pond was very skinny bass heavy 5 years ago, took a few out and added bg. Tadpoles are thriving along the entire shoreline. Any help would be appreciated.

Joey, The experts here usually suggest fishing with one of those live 3 inch BG on light line to test the waters for LMB

Is there aeration? Could have it had a fish kill that killed the bass, cut not all the bluegills? Leaving some BG to reproduce?
