Hello everyone i'm new to this site and to pond ownership. i recently bought my home and property with three small ponds the smallest is approximately 2000sq feet, the middle is .25 acre, and the big pond is 1 acre. The ponds are very old and spring fed by a pretty substantial spring that keeps a pretty constant flow of water through the ponds. the two smaller ponds are overrun with what I believe is pondweed. my question in regards to that is has anyone had success using grass carp to control pondweed in that small of a pond or is an aquatic herbicide the better option? I would also like to add some depth to the smaller ponds if possible they are currently between 4-5 feet at the deepest points. I have not determined how thick the muck is yet on the bottom but i would love any input on how to go about removing muck from the smaller ponds. And my final question is can these ponds be drained with the constant flow of a spring? Thanks everyone!

Welcome to PB.
Can you post pics of the ponds? Can the water from the springs be diverted ? A track hoe can remove dirt with water in the ponds.

1. Grass Carp. I have had success with them in my 1 acre pond, but it takes time.... If you have time then you can use them, but if your going to dig them out you may not need anything as the digging should take care of most the weeds I would think at least for a while. If it were me I would dig it out and down first then see what kind of weed situation you have.
It may be so little then you can control it with Aquashade or something.
Grass Carp get big not sure you would want them in a tiny pond. I put 7 in my 1 acre pond and it took them a year or so and with a little help of AQ Shade and some Curtine Plus granules I now have mine fairly under control.
Have no idea how to drain a pond with a spring in it? Sounds like a pretty neat setup tho. Like Eric said some pics would be nice that may help some of these experts out so they can better help you.

The only difference between a rut and a Grave is the depth. So get up get out of that rut and get moving!! Time to work!!
