I haven't posted in awhile.

We are in a drought here, the pond is pretty low and the artesian well has stopped flowing. One good rain should get it flowing back again. I hope we get one soon, don't want the pond to get super hot while its this low.

I stalked the feeder at set time in hopes to pick off the one last grass carp in the pond. I saw it briefly but it sure has gotten spooky.

While I was posted up I saw a flounder swim by the feeder , saw a tarpon roll on a feeding fish or minnow. I saw a couple snook prowling around the base of the feeder post looking for an easy meal.

I also saw something swiping in at small fish feeding on pellets but it was so fast a literally could not see what it was. My suspicion it could be one of those snapper.

If you recall I hooked a snook in the eye ball awhile back, I call it ole one eye. I saw it come up into very shallow water and boy does it look bad. It was emaciated and has missing scales and doesn't look healthy at all. I guess the way snook stalk pry having one eye is a real disadvantage. It is a real shame. I think it will end up dying here soon.

I will (try to) set the go pro at the feeder base this weekend and see if I can get some under water action.

Took a buddy to the pond Saturday to fish and we got four of these things, here is a pic of two of them. They look really healthy. They seem to be hammering the CNBG and TP. Finally got a little rain, hope keeps raining for awhile.

Nice snook. Those always remind me of the bonefish we see in schools in shallow water in the Caribbean.

They are getting fatter! More pond Snook after work last Friday. They sure do like dead shrimp right on the bottom, I got two of them. I was alone so you get my best effort of a "snook Selfie"

Great work and effort of utilizing some out-of-the-box fish in your pond!

All I can catch is snook as of late. I have seen a tarpon feeding , saw a flounder swim by the feeder awhile back. But the snook are feeding heavily and I cant get past them. After landing one or two the fish seem to scatter away.

That last snook did take drag all the way out to the middle of the pond before he tired out. That one is starting to get some girth. They are like walleye, don't get girth until they get a certain length.

COLD SCARE ...........

it was a long cold week here in north FL, it got down to 28 a couple nights and didn't get over 40 for nearly a week. The Intercostal waterway near me has lots of floating dead snook and tarpon.

I let the artesian well run all week and monitored the water temp in the pond. It didn't get blow 51 as far as I can tell and no dead fish that I can tell.

I know the water temp in the shallow canals around the area was down to 45-46 degrees and 48 in the bigger water. The water in the canals and waterway has strong tides and the water mixes rapidly and chills faster than it does in a still pond is my theory. Plus the 74 degree water flowing from the well has to help too.

Back into the 70's today so things should warm back up.

RER,
Explain please. The water from the well is 74 degrees? Is this from ground water? How does it stay 74 degrees or does it stay above water to warm up first? Our feeding and eating season would be much longer if we could pump 74 degree well water into our ponds all winter smile

The water that comes out of the well is 74 degrees year round. mine is tapped into the Floridian aquifer approx 300 ft down, it free flows with natural head pressure. However my shallow ground water well is approx. 72-74 degrees also. I think this has been able to keep the pond above lethal temps during the rare extended cold weather we get about every 5 years.

Wow, amazing, I thought underground water was the same temp from north to south (I assumed a little variation) based on the insulating qualities of land? The gypsum mines by us are used for 'cold storage' for business records and data tapes etc since they stay about 52 degrees year around.

If you went 100 feet down and created a storage cavern in N florida wouldn't the air temps in that cavern still be 52 degrees? If so how does the ground water stay at 72-74?

I do notice that our ground water does get colder in winter somehow. I say that only because the water from the tap (well) is much colder sooner when taking a drink or brushing teeth in winter and the setting on the hot water heater has to be turned up a fuzz to get to the same setting on the shower mixer handle. It takes more hot water to mix with the colder cold water to get the same comfort temp in the shower so you notice the mixer handle is at a different position.

You probably save lots of energy when your hot water heater brings the temp from 72 to 102 deg or 103 deg vs our 48 or 50 to 102 or 103!

Can you imagine if you had access to a warm spring up here in the northern wastelands and could pump 78 deg water into your pond all winter. You would have an awesome growing season and fish would love their 'hottub'

the ground is defiantly not 52 degrees down here.
Even the County/city water supply is around 72-74 from the buried pipes.

I'm just glad for it to have saved the fish in the pond from a cold weather fish kill.

Ground temps vary by latitude. Our caves are around 56F in MO.

Since I do no know exactly what and how many of each of the unusual fish are in the pond. I decided to buy a cheap fish tagging kit. When the water warms up in the next 4-6 weeks ill start fishing again. This way I will know if I have been catching the same few fish or if there are more numbers than expected. I plan on taking measurements to track growth. Although simply by catch photo and release over the last few years I have seen definite growth. It will be more helpful to know more details and I think this will help me figure out the best way for future management of this little pond.

Ill post as much as I can....

Pond water was 62 this weekend, I think I should wait until it hits 70 before catching and tagging due to risk of cold stress infection.

Any thoughts ?
