Haven't been home since Sunday...getting a house ready to sell in NE Houston. Walked down to the pond at feeding time to watch them feed (and make a few casts). The fish fed hard. Water is 82 degrees today. A bit cooler than a couple of weeks ago here in SE Texas. It was 88 degrees then. Summer is about here.

Put in about 5 hours of dozer time (JD 550G) this past week on a new wetland or pond, depending on how my timing goes with rain this summer. Just trying to remove a deep layer of topsoil over the field tiles now to speed things up later and to get some more dozer experience. Rain has stopped work for now. We built this quarter acre wetland last summer to get fill for a future pond pad. It has very little watershed but is as tight as a drum. Will move in plants once the water is a little warmer.

Had a bunch of nieces and nephews over and the kids had fun catching goldfish. Harvested about 40 last night. I emptied the live well (front loader stainless steel drum). The GBH has been making 2 or 3 calls a day now and boldly selecting a choice goldfish out of the drum. I emptied the drum in the woods so the raccoons are going to eat well tonight. The GBH was bummed that it was back to wading and stalking and striking now.

Now that my goldfish are pellet trained we just 'chum' the water and catch them easily on frozen corn.

I unloaded a half ton of lime at the pond in preparation for treatment. Yes, my back is yelling at me about the abuse! blush

Saved a parrot fish.

Well not at my pond but the big pond called the Caribbean sea.

At about 50' depth came across a parrotfish about a foot long hooked in the mouth, fishing line snapped and wrapped around a gorgonian. Fish looks dead laying there.

Grab ahold of the hook and fish comes to life. I'm holding fish while closely watching that parrot shaped beak lest the fish decides I'm the enemy and goes into attack mode. Work with the hook for 30 seconds having zero luck getting the barb back through when I realize the fish is snagged just above the mouth instead of through the mouth. Take my knife off my BC (bouyancy compensator, not black crappie), insert the tip and cut the quarter inch of skin holding the fish (parrotfish appear to have increddibly tough skin).

Let the fish go, it lists momentarily in the water collumn, then is off like a rocket. Took the two hooks sinkers and line back with me out of the water.

So one more parrot fish is out grazing algae off coral reefs today than otherwise would have been. Now when I dive the area will be watching for a parrot fish with a scar on the left above its mouth.

Good job.

Surprised he let you do that. Figured he would have put the afterburners on when you got close.

Good job snrub, saving wildlife is cool thing to do. I have an HSB in the pond that may have a fly and some tippet line in it's mouth. Maybe sometime when you r down this way, I have a pond you can dive in and look for another fish to help out. smile

I am considering buying a used tank and bc(if I can find one) for pond diving at the pond. I would like to improve a few things on the pond bottom, like diffusers and woody cover.

Tbar I think the fish had already worn itself out by the time I got there, fortunately for me.

Tracy get certified to dive if you are not already before you use any gear. The course is pretty easy and is not that expensive. Way lot cheaper than an ambulance trip to the hospital or morgue for air embolism. One of the safest active sports around, but there are definitely some do's and don't's that need to be adhered to.

snrub, I have been certified Padi(I think that is what it was called) it was in or around 1980 when I got my certificate, and I've been diving a lot of places but not so much in the last 12 yrs or so. But I am glad u posted up here for others that might not be certified and want to dive their pond.

Watched the fish feed hard....they cleaned up the feed inside of 3 minutes. I checked water temperature...it is 80 degrees at about 8" depth. Filled the dock feeder with Triton (Cargill) 1/8", 3/16", and 1/4" pellets.

A guy doing some flagstone at the property texted me this morning and said "when did ya get the cows"?

I replied "I don't have any cows".

He texted back "well you have at least 8 cows standing on your dam this morning".

Dumped in our second 50# bag of feed of the year. fish are growing great this year. Able to keep the water temp in the 67-70 all year so far.

Perfect opportunity to say, "Oh, sorry. Guess they are rare spotted deer. So ok with you if I catch and sell them?"

Put in 170 lb of feed in five feeders. Fish still eating like crazy, good to see it isn't too hot yet. Some of those CNBG are looking really big for just two years old! Current pond record is 8 3/8 inches, but I'm thinking 9 by this fall. Hope for a 10 next year.

Sprayed for ants at base of one TH feeder, somehow they managed to invade. We saw tracks of other critters trying to get to the goodies, raccoons and field mice, but they failed.

The four geese have left. Not crying about it, but my wife misses them. GBH isn't going anywhere, however.

Bill I guess I owe the guy an apology.

He came over and they are not his cows..so maybe when I called he had a hunch they weren't his.

Very odd because his land surrounds me basically on 3 sides and the two guys on the 4th side do not have any cows.

I guess we'll see what happens.

Here they are yesterday morning:

Any chance they have a calf with them? The black one in the second picture looks like a steer.

Mark, do they have any ear tags? Sale barns and most cattle guys around here will use one color tag.

We had 5 beautiful Red Angus calves on our place week before last. I shut the gate to keep them in, and stated making phone calls. Ultimately it took about 30-45 minutes to get the owner notified, and he rode off with his calves trailing without even a thanks to the several of us that helped find him. Next time, his cows will be on the road, and he can worry about it. His cows have green tags, so I know who they belong to now.

Not sure Don...I haven't been down there, but will check it out this weekend.

Al the flagstone mason said they have a green tag on them, but when he tried to approach they would scatter away.

My neighbor that I am close with...said he couldn't find them last night when he walked the property.

I have not seen them on the cameras today.

Maybe they went back "home" where-ever that might be.

I had a neighbor a whose cows were getting out onto our place and another neighbor's a few years ago. They were also getting onto the state highway and being an extreme hazard. He didn't fix the fence or move the cows until the state troopers had a couple of conversations with him.
