Bass are on nests, saw a male guarding visible eggs. Redear and RES/BG hybrids are staging right off nesting sites. Almost showtime, provided the weather holds up.

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

A bunch of eater size CC came up for food in my 19 month old pond, and were aggressively taking food.

Still no CC feeding in my 4 month old pond, (nearly full now) and I put 13 more 8" CC in yesterday right by the feeding ring.

Sold my 2" HF water pump Friday and bought a 2" Honda pump. Tried it out on a long run today. As far as I can figure, it pumps about 8% more water on only 55% of the gas that the HF pump used, so about 60% more water per gallon of gas.

Very good day! Saw multiple bedding sites around the pond, the CNBG are definitely in the mood for romance. In fact, they are so naive that they swarm around the dock when we walk out on it.

Now have four working feeders. All pellets eaten quickly, within about 5 minutes. May have to increase feeding once I get more feed, now about 1 pound (12 seconds of Optimal) per day per feeder.

We saw one BIG (well, for a 10 month old) LMB, a good 15-16 inches and very well fed. Appeared to be sizing up dinner near the dock, there are a ton of CNBG there. Also we saw a couple of tilapia, though they weren't actively feeding.

Fertilized 50 pounds in the pond, the first time we've done this. Last year the pH & alkalinity were too low for a bloom, but this year is better.

Saw great blue heron and some cormorants. Unfortunately, the word is getting out about the fish. The GBH doesn't bother me much, but the cormorants are another matter. May have to get a license to discourage them from eating all the fish. We'll see.

Beautiful evening among the pines, wife & I listened to the frogs & occasional splash of a fish. When we left we saw two deer, a doe and nearly fully grown fawn.

We aren't there yet, but I'm thankful at how far we've come!

Over the past week, I have been watching an osprey enjoy our pond and a few fish. On Sunday, she(?) caught one the same time I did. She splashed down about 15' from the boat. Today I watched her dive 5 times. She only came up with 2 fish.

I love watching, but if I see her with a 3lb lm, I might cry.

A buddy was fishing in Wi. last year in a boat. He deep hooked a BG, and it didn't make it, but a Bald Eagle came down and grabbed it very close to the boat. Hmmmmmmmmm..... he thought.

He fed the eagle for an hour with small BG. They'd fly off, then be right back. He guessed they were feeding eaglets in the nest.

Pretty cool, whether an Osprey or an Eagle!!

Had a troop of Boy Scouts fish the pond today. Think there was 8 of them and they caught 7 CC about 3# each. Couple of the boys had fished before but until today had never caught anything. Also one kid caught a 1# CNBG as his first fish! They had a good time and actually thanked me for inviting them .... there is hope yet. It was a good day to be repeated.

That's awesome Pat...a great organization for kids. Hopefully, you helped hook some new anglers for life.

My pond cooled and turned over from the 3.4 inches of rain Friday. The water running in looked clear, but visibility went from about 18 inches to 2 inches. Bluegill still feeding, but not CC.

A boatload of toad tadpoles showed up in the YP/SMB pond. Water clarity in both ponds is very high.

Walked down to the pond to watch the fish feed. Threw a couple of handfuls of pellets before the dock feeder went off. I seem to have quite a few Fingerling LMB about 5" long that I have not previously noticed. Looks like the LMB got a spawn off last year after all. Water was 75• despite the cooler weather. The temp should be in the high 40's here in the morning.

Despite cooler weather, fish still swarming around feeders & dock. In fact, when a friend and I took the boat out, about fifty CNBG followed us halfway across the lake, hoping for a handout! I felt like the Pied Piper of Panfish...

Friend caught loads of fish despite outdated equipment (20 year old line???). Mostly CNBG, but when he put on a small crankbait the LMB were all over it.

Good news re LMB recruitment: Plenty of YOY fish, under 4 inches. Biggest we caught only 8 inches, but we have seen much larger ones in the lake, usually when the feeders go off.

Good news: Wild blackberries are in season! We ate a bunch, but there are plenty more. Hope to get grandkids there in time to harvest some, it will be good for them to see that food doesn't come from a plastic box in the store.

Bad news: We went to Canada goose nest intending to addle eggs, but too late! Mom & Dad Goose now have four goslings.

Oh, well, I'll put in Away with Geese lights after goslings depart. Before then there will be no point, parents won't leave them.

Nasty (and pretty large) black snake hanging around dock area, I guess because there are plenty of fish there. Snakes don't bother me much, except I've got four little grandkids who visit & fish from the dock. May have to show the snake that this is not a good spot for it to stay, despite all the food.

Brought a chair, a Yuengling Light, and a bucket of Aquamax LMB to the floating pier and watched the HSB explode. They are so active and fast that they frequently will take the LMB pellet before it floats back to the surface which is quite a feat considering the pellet sinks less than an inch.

Also, Weedeated around the pond edge to cut back some dark-green, thick leaved weed that will eventually grow prickly seedpods if left to grow. It makes it a 500% harder job once those seepods grow cause they make everthing stick together. I take a pic after some grows a bit and see if ya'll know what it is.

My 11 yr old grandson had one of his baseball teammates spend the weekend with us at the tail end of their spring break. They had a blast fishing swimming, peddling around in the little boat, feeding the fish, cruising our trails on 22 acres in a golf cart. Then inside they shot pool, played pinball machine, played ping pong, ate a ton of pizza and then played a few video games!!! The other little boy wanted to move in with us!! Making memories. Lots of fun.

And that is what this stuff is all about.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Awesome! I've seen lots of osprey, but never in Mo. Almost every time out west or in FL we see them. They do eat some fish though. Kind of a mixed blessing. Watched one in Utah hit and try to lift a big trout. He just couldn't fly off with it though.
I sure didn't know they hung out in Missouri. Do they nest around your place?

9 yr old pond, 1 ac, 15' deep.
RES, YP, GS, FHM (no longer), HBG (going away), SMB, and HSB (only one seen in 5 yrs) Restocked HSB (2020) Have seen one of these.
I think that's about all I should put in my little pond.

We had an Osprey at our pond in N. Illinois yesterday as well. This one made two spectacular dives but came up empty. Very cool to watch.

Bald Eagles are more common here than Osprey's. Both birds get a fish eating pass when they show up.

Eric,
I cannot view the video you posted... I can see all the photos in the album, however. Perhaps I've got some security setting stopping me from seeing the vids???

DJ, and Eric: The video played for me. I clicked on the photo and sent me to photobucket where it loaded slowly (probably my slow computer).

SetterGuy, I haven't seen the nest, but as often as I have seen the bird, I do think it is somewhere close. We have many more bald eagles in MO than osprey. I have only seen an osprey here occasionally before this year. It is exciting, like so many on the forum, I am old enough to remember when all birds of prey were quite rare and to see the comeback of Eagles, osprey and other big birds does my heart good.

Had a company get together around the pond and back yard. About fifteen people total, some employees and their families.

Had quarter pound Nathan hot dogs, brats and smoked chicken wings/legs smoked on a big green egg knock off along with other home made fixins with Texas cocoa cake and apple crisp to top it all off.

Shot up a couple boxes of clay pigeons and half a dozen of us fished. Most of my pigeons lived but had some crack shots in the bunch and a lot were killed. Lots of BG, a few hybrids and GSF, but no LMB or CC. With all the rain and unsettled weather bite was a little slow till about a half hour before sundown, then the BG could not get enough of the various lures.

A good time around the pond this evening.
