I have been looking into using Quikrete Rip Rap to line the edge of my pond instead of limestone or broken concrete. I'm looking for tips from anyone who has used it for this purpose. Has it worked out well? Did you go one or two bags wide? Also it seems to be quite a bit more expensive than the standard bag of Quikrete. Is there any reason to use the "Rip Rap" product instead of the regular bag of cement?

Interesting. I've never heard of it. Got any details?

I have used bags of plain concrete stacked dry for culvert crossings and to stop washes across trails.

QUIKRETE® Rip Rap - Scrim (No. 1134-80) is a commercial grade blend of Portland cement and specially graded sand, packaged in a fiber reinforced, biodegradable bag for erosion control applications.

Rip Rap requires no mixing or equipment to install. The free-form construction method also allows for the elimination of forming and finishing procedures and is ideal for remote and accessible locations.

Thanks Zep. So you just put the bags where you want them and wait for rain to set them?

That is what I have done with simple concrete mix. Is the "rip rap" mix cheaper?

Pure speculation here but I think those bags breakdown faster on the rip rap mix than standard quick Crete

I think it is a less brittle mix as well

I've seen it used under pedestrian bridges in remote sections of a local state park here in my neck of the woods, it's aged very well over the last 10+ years. I've wondered too if the standard quick Crete would work well around my pond. I'd love to use some at the mouths of my feeder creeks and the little boat landing area we have

That's what I'm wondering as well. If the only difference is that the bag breaks down faster it would not seem worth the 50%higher price for Rip Rap.

Rah - Has that held up well. How long did it take for the bag to break down?

I originally saw this in California on an old over/under bridge. It has worked very well for my purposes and the bags degrade way faster than I thought that they would. I certainly see no traces after a year, but I am not really sure if that is true after a shorter time frame. Do a Google or Google image search on "concrete bags stacked dry".

Custom68 after snooping around, heck I can't find it either.

Looks like BOTH Quikrete and Sakrete make it, but hard to find.

I suppose you're going to have to contact the home offices.

its kind of interesting and I was just curious on the cost. I can always use walls... Ha
And I saw the same thing on the Sakrete as well but nothing in my area shows up. I do have more lumber yards I can check but the 2 big box stores are kind of my go to...
thanks
Dave

Home Depot can order it but you have to go through their "Pro" department. They quoted me $6.15/ bag which is a lot higher than a standard bag of concrete mix.

Dane that sounds like a plan....and Custom68 I went to QUIKRETE web site and did a "chat".

This was the chat agent's answer:

"Certain products are only regionally available which would require special ordering, possible a minimum requirement and lead time. You will need to consult your local Quikrete plant for product availability at 817-783-3010 for Dallas and 913-441-6525 for Kansas City. Quikrete does not sell online or to the general public.

This is an old thread but it a great idea and one I never considered. This quickrete pdf goes into detail and they say regular 80 pound bags of sand mix can be used as well as their rip rap blend. For the difference in price, I'll look at the bags for a month!
