I don't think I have ever seen this in my .5 arce pond. Each morning since early Mid April my smaller LMB school up and swim end to end of my pond eating all the bugs off the top of the water. Is this just me or is this a little weird? My BG population is good so there is good forage...

Same thing happens on my pond. I call it the "Blue plate special." The easiest to catch protein is the menu for today.
IMO it's the same reason fish eat pellets. Bugs on top the water offer a nutritious meal and are easy to catch, same as pellets.

I have heard of people that use their pond perimeters for exercise walking have bass follow them around the pond having learned that humans walking the banks scare bugs into the water.
I have seen my BG follow me and snap up grasshoppers right behind me.
They learn where the easy meal is.

Fish know that the best way to grow (full stomach)is max energy input and minimize energy out put. + 1 on what Bill D. posted. LMB schooling up for an easy meal. BG will do the same on a bug hatch.

Normal behavior, plus staying together in schools, in shallow water offers protection from being eaten, as they eat. A school of fish is interpreted as one big fish from a distance. Plus, if attacked, the school flushes, which confuses the predator. Big bass can't decide which fish to chase.
Teach a man to grow fish... He can teach to catch fish...
