Hi,
I am just starting out in the process of building a new pond on my property, and need help finding someone for the design and construction aspects. I am looking at a small pond about 3/4 acre in size to put some fish in, and swimming. I am located near Marquette, Michigan, any contacts would be helpful. Thanks.

If using a state agency, which is a good idea, they will probably lean more towards the wildlife or fishing aspect, which isn't the best for a swimming pond. Let them know about the swimming and probably build a little deeper and steeper sides than they want. Plenty of good info on this site.

I have contacted the MI DEQ already and will contact the Soil Conservation extension. What type of slope are recomended for the sides 2'/1' 3'/1' (horizontal/vertical) I was thinking of trying to get 15' to 18' deep, and a shallower slope at one end of the pond.

You might want to check with your township for the slope requirements. Regulations vary considerably across the state. Some rural townships don't specify slopes. You may find that your pond depth is determined by the slope requirements and proposed width of your pond. Our requirements are to maintain a 3:1 slope to a 5-foot depth (for safety), then you can drop to your target depth. Your maximum slope in the deep areas will be determined by the material. If you are in sand, the stable slope will be 2:1 or less and the material will seek this angle of repose. Sketch it out to scale and see if you have allowed for enough pond width to meet your target depth.

MDEQ probably will not take much of an interest if your pond is less than 5-acres and does not impact a surface water body (lake, stream or wetlands). You need to maintain a 200-foot clearance from these features. There will also be county requirements for soil erosion and sedimentation control. Get all your planning and paperwork done correctly in the beginning and you will be well-prepared to complete the pond project without any major snags or regulatory nightmares.

Good Luck!
