I have a 1 acre pond, 2.1 million gallons and 12' max depth. Here in Northern California it is full right now from all the rain this season. I have catfish, bass, and bluegill in the pond. Aquatic plants began forming during our 4 year drought when the pond was very low.

Very soon, I will begin diverting creek water to offset evaporation as temps rise. That water goes into the pond via a 3 inch pipe.

I built a venturi using 2" pvc, using the diagram posted in response to one of my other questions. I'd like to install this and forget it ... but, I don't want to over-aerate or do anything to harm my pond. I read that folks with diffusers slowly introduce aeration, starting at 15 minutes per day. But that seems to be a lot more air than what a venturi would do, plus my setup is barely below the surface, not at the bottom.

Do you think I need to gradually phase in this new venturi system, or just turn it on and leave it on?

Hey Billy keep in mind the 15 minute rule and then 30 minute rule is for 2 things really.

1. A pond that has never had air in it ever and now you have a bottom diffuser in the pond that can and will bring up toxic gases from all the years of sitting so that's one reason for the slow start up.

2. You also need to follow this type of procedure if it's the middle of summer and your water is very warm why you may ask. Well you will have areas in your pond where the D.O. is non existent or very, very low and you don't want to mix all of that to fast not to mention you will have a big thermal temp layer in the deeper water and mixing to fast could also drastically change your water temp and fish don't like drastic changes...

With all that said I think you will be fine. I am no expert on Venturi systems, but in the spring your water is much colder and has a lot of D.O. in it already as cold water holds double the amount of D.O. than warm water. So I think you will be fine. Lets see what anyone else has to say maybe first but I bet your good to go.

The only difference between a rut and a Grave is the depth. So get up get out of that rut and get moving!! Time to work!!

The only damage I could see happening to your pond is getting an undesirable fish species introduced into your pond from the creek, a plant that you didn't want or possibly an excessive amount of nutrients if the creek catches runoff from farms or ranches with a lot of livestock.

I have a question. Will running an aerator at the bottom of my 27' deep pond delay the spawn in my pond by keeping the water temperature lower by mixing the cold bottom water with surface water.
