Hey folks. Any chance you could help me ID this little bird?
It has been hanging around our farm here for a week or so now. It will not fly away right away as you walk up to it. It will let you get 10 feet away then when it dos fly away it will only fly 2-3 feet off the ground.
The little bugger showed up this morning and was sitting on the door sill of the shop when I went out this morning.
It looks so much like a common sparrow but the belly is white. In the morning he is really puffy white trying to keeping warm.
It is a type of sparrow, but which is hard to tell. If you have a smart phone or tablet, get the Sibley guide to birds app. It it probably my most used app with great images and sounds.
Well the wife and I have looked really hard and we think it is a female Snow Bunting. I guess the male will head back to the arctic now when it is still -30C to guard nesting Territory and she will head back up after getting a good fill of bugs and seeds here.
I think you are right! Whenever I see them they are in a rapidly moving flock in the middle of the worst winter days. I never get a chance to see them sit still. We are in their "winter getaway" zone, so personally I think they are nuts.
