I have a 1/4 acre pond which was dug last fall and is full
its 16' deep in middle and has clay bottom.
over the weekend I put fathead minnows, perch, trout in it.
question is, how do I know when to start aerating?
I plan on installing system, just need to know whether i need to run out and do it now.
let me know if more info is needed
thanks

I usually suggest to not aerate until the turbidity of pond has cleared where the visibility is around 3 ft+. Aeration while the pond is turbid will tend to keep suspended particles suspended in the water column. Normally a pond in the northern states can easily go for one year without aeration and not have significant or measurable ecological degradation. This is especially true if the water clarity is 5-8ft and not a lot of tree leaves or organic material get into the pond.
Where did you find or get your perch and trout?

I got the fish from Imlay City Fish farm. They were great to deal with.
put 15 browns and 15 rainbows, 75 perch, 15# fathead min. and 3 catfish.
I was going to only stock the minnows, but my dad "took things over" and, well, thats what I got....
So I will wait till mid summer and use the water clarity as a gauge.
any suggestions on brands or systems?
thanks again

Brand of aerator?
as far as system I have gathered from this site that for a 1/4 acre pond -1 diffuser should be sufficient placed in the 8-10' range.( max depth should be 16' when at full pool)
I am also gathering that my 75 perch, 30 trout, and 3 channel cats are close to the sustainable limits of a 1/4 acre pond assuming water temps will stay favorable....
can the # of trout be added to....maybe a mother 30 bringing the total up to 60 total?
a little off topic.....
thanks

Main and most common brand of air compressor is either GAST or Thomas who make compressor including some another brand names on them such as sweetwater. There are a few other brands of compressor. Make sure it is oilless continuous duty. Rubber membrane diffusers are available in package systems or as separate items. Scan through the Aeration System posts for numerous good discussions of aeration systems both homemade, DIY, and 'package' systems.
