I'm basically looking for everyone's input on Yellow Perch in an Alabama pond. I have several clients just begging to try them. Problem is, I have zero experience with them. Can it be done? What are optimal stocking rates? Best fish to stock with them that are compatible....etc. Most of these folks are starting from scratch after the drought, so we'really treating it as an opportunity tof try something new.

I think there is another thread right now talking about northern versus southern strains of yellow perch. I've only had them a few years myself and sure am no expert but I'm sure one will come along soon. How well they do will vary from one BOW to another. In a small pond, I don't think they survive well long term with LMB because of their fusiform shape making them easy for LMB to swallow. Mine seem to do okay with BG and SMB. I don't think they are real strong swimmers like many predators. Good luck.

Read through, study, absorb, and believe the informative posts in this thread. It will answer most all your questions plus added information. Raising YP in your area can be done if you do it correctly. Correctly is the main word here.

Thanks for your input guys. I will read through the thread that you provided Bill. I am always excited to learn new tricks and practices. It also helps when a customer comes to me and says "Hey let's try something new. I'll let you run with it." Exciting stuff. The trick is going to be finding fish. Very tricky

To find some yellow perch in the SE get with LAT88. He knows where they are commonly found in your part of the country. Then go collecting. Give LAT88 some time and he will likely have hatched some of his own YP. Then get some southern raised yellow perch from him.
