Hello All

I am currently working in a project to build a 160m x 30m pond.

The purpose of which is for Watersports. I own and operate a Watersports school and we wish to build a body of water to run a 2.0 wakeboarding system (have a quick Google search to see what that is)

We have found a flat section if land that would allow for the space to build the pond and I have some questions and I am seeking some advice regarding the basics:

We are considering that building up rather than down would be the most cost effective method of construction using sand and a 1mm pvc liner, would I be correct it this assumption.

We would be using a borehole to fill the pond which would be brackish water as we are located near the sea.

As people will be in the water we want to ensure that it stays safe to swim in, what are the considerations that I need to consider with this.

We are going to be building accommodation near the pond and want to ensure that the lake is not going to smell and put people off wanting to stay there.

I have been recommended to put in a solar pump to keep the water moving are there any other considerations that you would recommend taking in board.

I greatly appreciate any advice that can be given. And my thanks in advance for your help.

Cheers

Ben

If you don't have a huge filtration or water purification system for it, you should consider areas where you can put plants to act as a biofilter.

How puncture resistant is PVC? I have seen some liners from these guys (they make liners to be used in ski parks and water ski lakes) and they are TOUGH!!

Welcome Ben.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

If he is near the coast, it is likely all sand. A liner may be the best option unless the water table is high enough to dig down and use it. But yeah, a pond used like that will need a tough liner.

I would consider doing a little travel to other wake parks and see what they are doing. Keeping the water moving in a large pond using just water pumps will be costly, or require a lot of solar. Aeration less so, but may detract from the experience if not placed well. The aeration may have a positive effect on any smells by keeping anaerobic decomposition to a minimum, where most smells come from.

Good luck!
