Howdy all. I am new to the forum as I recently became a land owner with a small 1/4 acre pond.
I have read through many of the previous threads regarding Alum, and have followed some of the leads to locate Alum. However most of the companies either are no longer in business, or don't know anything about Alum.
Has anyone purchased Alum in the Houston area in the last few months? (2013) If so, I would be grateful for some leads.
Thanks in advance, and great site..!!

Kelly, Greenville store works for me. I have 3 small ponds probably close to an acre total, about how many bags would that take? They are 1/4, 1/5, and 1/10th. Average depth is 8'.

Al, pick up a buttload for Brian while you're at it. You still have his credit card info, right? He's gonna need it.

Ha! I got my own hungry little mutts to worry about, and they're not eating good in chocolate milk colored water.
I'm wanting one of those little 1" Honda water pumps, and that might work perfect for spreading Alum.

Nope, that's the one. I'm afraid my 2 and 3" pumps would drain the slurry to fast.

Not if you choke your discharge down to a 3/4" pipe and spray through a fine nozzle. That might give you enough time to cover your whole area with it.
Give a few country boys a little money, beer, an arc welder and power tools and great things can happen...or someone is going to the hospital or jail.

Rentzlaw I had thought about that also, and it definitely would work with the right nozzle. Problem is, one 2" is loaned to a buddy for his mutts, and the other's set up for a sprinkler system on the dam of the big puddle.
I'm thinking about a rig I could just throw in the back of the Mule and go. The 3" is just to big and heavy for that.
I'll need to sit down and figure out how many different uses I could get out of a 1" pump, and then decide. Alum, lime, fertilizer? I'm almost there.

This continuous slurry dispenser uses a 30-gal drum and a 1" Honda water pump. It works well, but can get tricky if the transom-mounted intake gets clogged or finds air (looses its prime).

Kelly, as usual, ingenious. Are the PVC pipes "T'd" together in the barrel with a drop tube to keep them horizontal?

Are the PVC pipes "T'd" together in the barrel with a drop tube to keep them horizontal? The horizontal pipes have threaded end-caps that thread into 1-1/4" bulkhead (tank) fittings. The mounting-height of the bulk-head fittings determines the level that water achieves within the drum before it overflows through the horizontal pipes. The fittings need to be at the same level on the drum for obvious reasons. The 1" Honda pump "jets" water into the bottom of the drum - through twin-venturi agitators that are positioned on the bottom of the drum. Only 1/2-throttle or less is needed. The agitators churn the alum until it dissolves, which then exits through the discharge-pipes. Aluminum sulfate isn't 100% soluble; so it's necessary to occasionally empty the non-soluble solids from the drum on big jobs.

I believe Kelly said they have it at the Waller store. You can check his profile for the address.

Somehow I did not come across Helena Chemical (Waller, closest to Houston it appears) in my search. I did come across Chem1 who pointed me to BWI Supply selling 50 lb bags out of their 1229 North Post Oak store for $22.95.

Any farm chemical dealer that orders from Helena can get it for you.
