We just closed on our property this past Tuesday so I figured I'd stop lurking and go ahead and become a member.
Our property has a 3 1/2 acre pond that is 18-20' deep and another that is an acre in size and 16-18' deep. Both ponds are surrounded on 3-sides by woods and the dams only have a few sapling trees that I will need to eliminate (after reading that advice to others on Pond Boss). Both ponds were created in the late 1980's by the previous owners by damming two deep ravines and leaving existing trees in the ravines as structure. The larger pond has what I believe is APW along East bank and the smaller pond has some Duckweed.
The ponds were stocked with LMB, BG, Crappie and catfish but still need to talk to the previous owners and determine which Crappie and catfish that they stocked it with. Have not fished the property yet (have not fished at all in 39 years) so don't know anything about fish size, stunting or over-population and need to learn much more about the ponds from information gleaned from this site.
Much wildlife on this property as its surrounded on 3-sides by farmland and just north of an 11,000 acre lake and extensive State land associated with the lake. Previous owners told the realtor that deer, wood duck and turkey hunting on property is very good and I've seen a lot of sign/evidence to that so far. There used to be raccoon crap on the pier every time we'd visit but after I started peeing on the grass and bottom two wooden steps there has been no more raccoons visiting.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to asking questions and learning from this site and meeting other fellow Iowegians with more pond experience that could visit our property and give first-hand advice on what we could do to improve our ponds.
