Hi My name is Hartvig, and I live in Norway. I have a pond at one million gallons where I have started a major upgrade. I've started a YouTube channel to have a place to gather documentation from the project. This year the focus has been the environment around the pond. I have spent much time getting cleared away lots of trees and scrub. in addition, I replaced the fence. Next year I have to look at what to do with the pond itself. Since I live in Norway, it is now winter, and the pond is covered with snow and ice. When I start again in the spring, I hope there is someone who will give me advice on what kind of solutions I shall choose to create circulation in the water [video:youtube] https://youtu.be/Mwt-ad3y2AA [video:youtube] https://youtu.be/BL4Kvf5EOrM [video:youtube] https://youtu.be/L1bkKDrzLzo [video:youtube] https://youtu.be/nyffx1PYBwU [video:youtube] https://youtu.be/h5HSFER3Srs

Welcome to PBF Hartvig!
Beautiful pond and setting! I've always wanted to visit your country.
There are lots of good people here at PBF that I'm sure can help when the time comes and you have specific questions. Please tell us more about the pond. For example, how deep is it? When I think of Norway I think of cold, harsh winters. Is that correct? I am looking forward to following along as your project progresses.
Again welcome!
Bill D.

Hey Bill Thanks for the nice welcome. Finding this forum here, it felt like coming home I have participated in various forums in the last 10 years, but this has only been forum dedicated to koi and goldfish. Here there have been few who have had knowledge to challenges with a pond in the size I have. Not to talk about the challenges of the temperatures I have where I live. At this forum it is I who have the "small pond"! I live halfway between Oslo (the capital) and Lillehammer (Olympic Winter Games 1994). In other words, the temperature range from + 30C in summer to -25C in winter. I will make a separate film about the details of the pond. When you have seen it will be easier to understand what I'm trying to get to The main reason I'm making a YouTube channel, is that my other hobbies is flying with drones (Phantome 4), shooting film (Drone, Canon and GoPro) and create gardens. In connection with work, I have a need to learn how to edit film. When kids has started to fuss about creating their own YouTube channel, I thought that it's okay to do it yourself first so that I actually understand what this is about. The bonus is that it is a great way for my own part, to document what happens in the pond. It is especially nice to let others who are not able to have such a pond, the opportunity to participate in this journey. It's nice if you all subscribe to my channel. The aim of the channel is not to maximize subscribers. But it's nice to see that people like what I spend time creating. If the goal were as many subscribers as possible, the kids are telling me that I must create a channel about Pokemon Go or makeup. I think I'll stick to my pond

Hey Hartvig,
While the videos are nice, and I'm sure they will be a great resource for you in documenting your project, I suggest, in addition to posting video links, you might consider just posting a few photos and a few words of explanation/query as well. This might get you more responses from the pros on the forum. A lot of the pros do their best to respond to as many posts as they can but time is limited. It can take quite a lot of time to watch videos. Just a suggestion.

I'm not a pro and don't know a lot about cold water fish ponds.
But, welcome home.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Dealt with a few Koi ponds. Gonna need some good filtration...especially with those trees around it. A million gallons is quite an undertaking for a koi pond! How deep is it? What predators do you have around? Birds and mammals will destroy the koi as they like to be up at surface. Put some big hiding spots in for them to escape.

Thanx MaxH The pond are 4 meter deep on its deepest. Birds are the biggest threat. It is normally no raptors in this part of Norway. But ... in a later video, you will see that they are here too ...

Great. Do you ever fish for them? What do you mean with "fish for them?". Fishing rod is prohibited in this pond

Episode 19The 1.000.000 Gallon Koipond - E019 - How to make massive trees into woodchips
In todays episode, you can see how the contractor made woodchips of all the trees, twigs and sprigs. BRUKS mobile chippers are an impressive sight when they chew up big threes. In one day, they removed more than 200 m3 of woodchips. It would have taken me all summer to do it by hand. Despite rain and mist, I was able to get some cool drone videos. Unfortunately, I had to leave for work when the "Chipper" took care of the largest trees. When I got back home 10 hours later, it was all gone. Link

Episode 20: The 1.000.000 Gallon Koipond - E20 - What the Mobile Chipper left behind In todays episode, you can see what the chipper had left behind. The chipper removed more than 200 m3, witch was a big improvement. But the chipper left behind a lot of twigs and sprigs. He did not want to remove them because the contractor was worried he would get stones into the chipper. Luckily I had another contractor lined up who could fix the problem. Link

Episode 21:The 1.000.000 Gallon Koipond - E21 - Excavator to the rescue
In todays episode, you can see the excavator which helps me take this project a quantum leap forward. It was a big job to remove all of the branches and sprig. It was an even bigger job to remove all the major roots that were left behind. Link
