Needed something better to catch large amounts of HBG. Both for bait and reduce the numbers to grow larger panfish. It has 4 throats and a easy access door. I added a bait holder and also to a grinder to most of the wire, since I call out bleeding like a stuck pig. I hope to test this out soon. Let you know more details.

Wow, was that home fabricated? Impressive!

Will it go in the water vertically like in the pictures? What keeps it oriented in the upright position?

Keep us in the loop on how it works. I'm curious if the fish prefer to go in one door or the other.

Canyon, it will not be vertical laying flat down. The tube I made to go inside has a 6" cap that holds a bit of air so when testing it out on long throws it sinks slowly and flat. I did not make this one, but I do have friend that's good with fab work and has made a few of these.

The trap worked absolutely great. First night out the following morning pulled up about 68 hybrid bluegills. Noticed lots of smaller sub 1" trapped in the mesh. We really don`t mind the sub 1" HBG left in the pond just trying to get those numbers of 2"-6" out. Second night we still had plenty of left over fish food from the first night so just dried it out and rest the trap. Second day I pulled it up slowly from 4'-5' fow, noticed lots of those sub 1" we able to squeeze through the mesh before it broke surface. Ended up with 42 that day. Cold front came through the third night we put out. Next morning only yielded 33, but were more in the larger 5" range. Very satisfied with this trap so far.

Hey SB,

That is way cool! Some questions. How big a fish do you think you can trap? How did you end up with an over abundance of HBG? Are they GSF X BG? If yes, are you also catching a lot of just BG and GSF or only HBG?

@Bill, from my understanding the way the trap is designed you want the fish to turn left or right once 2/3 of the fishes body is beyond mesh furthest inlet. Giving fish too much room after they have entered the trap allows fish to turn toward exits and possibly leave. Fish tend to pass exits if there is little room for them to try and make a 90 degree turn. My case we are trying to get 2"-6" fish out meaning I have my bait tube about 3" from the openings, forcing fish to turn.
If I pushed open the entrances a .25" and made my bait tube slightly smaller I'm sure I could get 6"-8" fish in it easily. On that note I would imagine I lose most of 2"-3" fish.
This pond was stocked only with HBG. We had 5 straight years of only seeing HBG caught. Another pond on our property above this one had a major rain event, even with ruble and fish netting managed to get at least a few pure bluegill in the HBG pond. This past year I'm starting to see more characteristics of BG mix in our HBG population. So we are trapping small - medium sized fish giving them the eye test more HBG the go back more BG traits they get used as bait. Three months ago we also stocked 300 pure greenies to help get those desired traits back in line.

That's a nice trap. Where did you get it? Sorry if I missed that info in a earlier post.
Jeff

9 yr old pond, 1 ac, 15' deep.
RES, YP, GS, FHM (no longer), HBG (going away), SMB, and HSB (only one seen in 5 yrs) Restocked HSB (2020) Have seen one of these.
I think that's about all I should put in my little pond.

Haha. Snrub I`m not saying a GSF will ever get a wall mount in my home...but I can imagine a 10" GSF will out pull a similar sized bass everyday.

And a similar sized HSB will pull both of those at the same time! grin
