I’m looking to replace my single axle utility trailer. I’ve always had those made from angle iron but am considering a tubular framed model as they are supposedly stronger. I have read on some forums that they tend to rust from the inside out due to trapped moisture but the folks who build them have told me they do not. I would like to hear your thoughts on this subject. This particular one allows the tailgate to lay flat inside the trailer to allow for hauling longer material without removing the tailgate. Here is the URL to the one I’m considering.

I have an 18 foot deck over trailer. It is about 12 years old. I run the salt covered hwy#401 to Toronto in the winter with it. I had to do a big over haul on the tube frame this summer. One third of the 2"X1" cross tubes were rusted out from the inside out. These and the out side 2"X2" were ruff shape but the "C" channel was just pitted from the rust.

This trailer gets so much salt that I had to buy new rims because one of the four was leaking down over night and it was the rim that had rusted through.

Re welded it up with the same tubing to match and four new galvanize dipped rims and we are good to go.

My next trailer will be "C" channel everywhere in aluminum.

Cheers Don.

2Old...those look nice...and $1000 seems like a great price for a 6x12 trailer that looks like that. You think the 6x12 would hold two full size Honda Rancher/Foreman ATV's?

I do like those aluminum trailers, but I just can't justify the additional cost.

Don, were those cross members that rusted out open on the ends or welded closed against the side members? I don't expect mine to ever see salted roads but it will be exposed to hi humidity all it's life.

Zep, I dunno, I'd just have to do the math! I know my current 5x10 is FULL with my Kawasaki Mule 4010 on it. I need something bigger to haul my 61" zero turn mower. They offer this trailer in a 6x14 for only $60 more, that's probably what I'll go with. I can get two full dresser motorcycles on it in a staggered formation. Then.....they offer it in a 6.5 x 14 for only $40 more, funny how it's always just a "little bit more"!

2Old....I want a decent quality trailer that you can side load two ATV's. It won't get much use.

I think the side-load enables me to get a shorter trailer, which is kind of my goal.

Maybe something like this...maybe a bit longer, but not much.

I have a Triton AUT 1282 trailer which is the same as the AUX trailers now that has seen a LOT of use over the past 8 years, and I can load ATV's from the side. I made a set of ramps that I hook over the side rail lip. All aluminum, and the trailer has slots where the tie downs can be moved anywhere to accommodate any tie down configuration you want.

What is great about the trailer is the weight - it allows you to carry a greater payload. I have electric brakes on mine.

Scott that looks really nice. There are two Triton dealers within 20 mins of my house. I need to pay them a visit.

The other thing that I like is being up here where they use salt on the roads, I have no rust on the trailer. The zinc coating is pretty much used up on some of the bolts, so I will replace all bolts next year. The trailer is welded together tho, not bolted.

If you go that route, go with the fold down rear gate. I made mine quick removable by making pins that go in place of the bolts that hold it on. The gate is a HUGE sail when driving on the highway. The ramps that I made can be used to load from the side or from the rear, and I rarely use the gate any more. I really, really like the "move anywhere" hold downs. That feature really comes in handy. 9/16" wrench or socket is all that it takes to move the hold downs.
