I thought it might be of general interest to start a thread on aeration specifically designed to open a hole in ice. I am currently researching this and we have discussed it as part of other threads, but I thought that a dedicated topic might be useful for others in the future. I am thinking that an 80-120 watt linear-piston compressor might be good, like these:

http://www.whatpond.com/easypro/easypro-aeration/linear-piston-compressor/

combined with an inexpensive coarse-bubble wastewater diffuser like this:

http://www.coleparmer.com/Product/Downflow_Coarse_Bubble_Diffuser_Celcon_3_4_NPT/EW-70025-04

My thinking is low maintenance, low noise, and a reasonable start-up cost. The diffuser would go in 4' of water. Does anyone have experience with specific makes or models? Does anyone see a flaw in this system, its sizing, or have any alternative suggestions? Any success stories? Anyone know of a source for 3/4" sinking line in a 25' length? Any help or ideas are appreciated.

I bought my pump from these guys. I've also bought stuff for my septic system from them before.

Here's a 12v de-icing system.

kasco 12v de-icer

Now, this isn't a winter aeration system, but you asked for a de-icer.

cfy7 - Thank you for the lead on a supplier of compressors.
esshup - I think an aeration system would be more of a "flip a switch" solution.
