I had a friend fishing the pond last weekend with his wife and 5 yr. old son. They caught a few Yellow Perch that had a blue mouth on the inside. I asked Bill Cody about it and he wanted pictures....

So, they came over again yesterday and caught one, and now we have pictures. Only a few YP had the blue mouth, and they were the larger females, 13" long or so.

So Bill, here are your pictures. Any idea why the blue coloration?

As you can see from the pictures, it's not just one fish.....

Any Perch with blue coloration externally?

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.

Yep. Seen that before in my kids.

Comes from sucking on a grape Popsicle laugh in the summer time.

None. At least none observed. Water has a lot of tannins in it, visibility is roughly 24" - 30" due to the tannins.

I have never noticed yellow perch with the blue hue inside the mouth. Interesting character. Possibly a strain characteristic or a response to the environment or maybe some sort of chemical deficiency?

Bill:

This year is the 2nd year in a row that the pond has been heavily stained by tannins. The YP are Lake Erie descendants, I sourced them from Cecil.

As for food, I have been feeding Optimal Bluegill food since last year, and started feeding the sample bag of Optimal Yellow Perch food that I received earlier this year.

Only the larger females are showing the blueish color, and not all of them.

Must have bagged the wrong product in the Optimal Bluegill food bag with "Optimal Bluemouth food".

It would be interesting so see them under UV black light. Might be natural colour from being protected from the UV light by the tannins. When pulled from the water the UV light shows a blue huge.

No idea. C&R unless hooked too deep. With LMB in the pond I especially want the females to stay in the pond to reproduce, and the larger ones look to be females.

We are seeding another pond with some of our young perch. Our perch in the old pond with no pond dye look blue when we let them go in our buddys pond.

We only use a half a pint for the acre size pond and treat it four times a year.

I am betting the perch are taking in the pond dye some how.

Donno, there is no dye in my pond, only tannins from leaves when the water ran above ground in the woods, then into the pond earlier this year.

It definitely helped lengthen the interval between weed/algae treatments. That "bump" was enough to keep the pond colored for the rest of the year.

Wow maybe the perch have blue mouths from pond dye? I use two quarts a year in our pond that is 1 acre when completely full and 1 million gallons.

Cheers Don.

Sorry thought it was the same pond as your above statement from another thread.

Cheers.
