I have twice now had a full grown gbh apparently "campout" under my walkway to my dock. Both times I never knew he was there and got within 10 feet of him and he screamed and flew out right in front of me and scared the crap out of me!!! Has anyone ever tried to catch one in a steel trap? Maybe accidently caught one while trying for coons and other varmits?. Will a steel trap work under about 6 inches of water? Found a 9-10 inch cnbg floating at the waters edge with a spike hole in him. This thing is starting to PMO!!!

My gramp and I caught a GBH by accident, coon/mink/muskrat water trapping (1 1/2 single spring undercoil) many years ago. No doubt it stepped into the front edge of the cubby on accident. We used a long handled trapping shovel to pin it down and let it out. But be VERY careful about that 2 foot long 'sword' beak they have. We knew a DNR officer who literally lost an eye trying to let a GBH out. Also, I have never asked but assume the DNR consider GBH 'protected' in some fashion. I am a firm believer in managing your land and pond as you see fit, but care and caution are advised. JMHO.

Wow I cant get near that close to mine... He will sit on other side of pond now... he used to not do that. Not sure on catching one.... like DrLuke says... could be more trouble then it's worth... It sure aint worth losing an eye over!! Yikes!!!! I may have to come up with some other kind of alternative to deter him..... hmmmm I can think of a few...

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

No but Trap was under water due to high water and I assume this bird chased a fish but got more than what he wanted or maybe it thought it was a beaver.
