My 2 acre pond is about 1 and 1/2 years old and is staying close to full pool at 11 feet at the deepest. The color of the water is a light green and very pretty. After hard rain naturally it gets some muddy but still registers at least 12 inches on my secchi dish in the shade. The average visibility is around 24 inch and the max I have ever had was about 38 inch. My question is...What is good or acceptable and what would be too much visibility depth?? What should I strive for??

If you have a bloom going 18-24" is good. Clearer than that and you can start to have vegetation issues.

It depends on goals. 18 -24 is good if your goal is max fish production. Less than 12 is dangerous.

Too much algae? Then the oxygen levels get out of wack? I've always had about 18"-24", but with a lot of FA, now floating around, and these high temps, no rain for months, the visibility seems to be decreasing. I must just love to worry, ha! Thx Jeff

Visibility of less than 12" due to green water makes the chance of a DO shortage greater at night, when there are a few cloudy days in a row, or when the green bloom runs out of fuel (nutrients) and all the algae dies quickly and then decomposes. All these conditions can result in a rapid DO loss. The more algae present and less visibility the more chance of a DO loss when the algae is not able to make dissolved oxygen.

Thanks to all for your help. I am considering aeriation and will be studying the best system for my 2 acre 11 ft deep pond.Definantly going with bottom diffusers. Already have electricity right at the ponds edge.

Going up tomorrow to check. I'll have to run solar aeration, when I add it.

I have had different pond types in my pond over the years. Green bloom and so on. I choose to have a clear pond now with lots of plants producing good oxygen. A few years ago when I last measured I had clarity down to 6 feet 4 inches. I think I am more clear then that now. I don't have any fish now that will muddy the water and so I like to watch my fish.

My clarity seems fine. Got over to the pond a few hours ago. Water seems warm for the first 12-18", but is pretty cool below that. With my leak, the drought, 90+* every day and wind, I'm now down about 4'. Everything seems ok for now. Clarity may have actually increased. FA isn't any worse. Sure would be nice to get a break in the temps, and a drop of rain or two..
