I had mentioned on a couple of previous posts last spring that I had a small (16X75) forage pond dug in an area west of my big pond. For many years I'd had a muddy mess in this spot due to all the topsoil having been removed for use on the side of my levee back 9 years ago. So when I had my dirt guy out to do some stuff for me I had him dig me a hole.
Really I wasn't positive it would work...I filled it with water and dumped 5 lbs of FHM in it. Threw a couple of pallets in for spawning structure, threw feed in every few days and just waited. The end goal was just to have an easy food supply for the other ponds that was somewhat self-sustaining. It's fairly deep (10+ feet at the deep portion) so I assumed it'd survive the winter, but that was mostly just a guess on my part.
I set my first traps in there 2 days ago just to see what I could see.
It's chock full of FHM. I probably took out twice as many adult FHM's as I put in and it didn't even make a slight dent in the feeding frenzy the next day.
So I'm going to call this one a win.

Great to see a plan working out so well. Just wait until you want three forage ponds and then six....
