Something is schooling in my pond. They weren't there yesterday. Some are breaking the surface and making small jumps. There is also some splashing - possibly predators. The school is moving around the pond at a fairly brisk pace. I also saw a cluster of fry or fingerlings in the shallows in one area and a few individuals that were a bit larger and thicker bodied in another area. This is the first time I've seen either of those things. Yesterday I fished a twister tail and several fish attacked it, but didn't really hit it. I think they were trying to drive it off. I caught one GSF that hit the instant the lure hit the water. Today I tried a roostertail and got no strikes at all.

Do you have any shiners in your pond? My GSH do the jumping thing like the devil himself is chasing them! Your description of the thicker body on the larger ones fits as well.

Bill D.,

I have what I think are silver shiners in the pond, and I added golden shiners a few weeks ago. Fishing has been very slow in the pond lately, and my only guess at the reason is that many of the fish are spawing, but I don't know if that would account for the lack of action.

The other day this past week, I had a dark cloud in the water, or a shaded area under the water. it was a pretty good sized area. Not sure what it was but I am guessing a large school of FHM's or TFS.

Before I had predators in the pond, that was a common sight (FHM's)...not so much anymore. I noticed yesterday that I have a new spawn of Gambusia minnows working in the shallows. There was so many, the water had a shimmering effect. I threw out some 1/8" pellets out and they would cluster around them to feed...then, a LSL LMB would show up, explode on the scene, and crash the party. That was a pretty impressive thing to watch.

I have seen this with our shiner minnows too. When they spawn we see this balling up and jumping. It starts for us around May and gos till August.

Most of the time it is at dusk and in front of our water fall.

LSL is Lone Star Legacy??

John,
Sunil is correct...that would be Lone Star Legacy - previously known as Camelot Bell...or as Pat W. Refers to them, "legs"...

This school you describe Turtlemtn, I think I'm seeing the same thing. I was at our pond for the last four days, and noticed a cloud about 10' X 10' of bubbles. It did slowly move around the pond, and wasn't all that close to the bank. My son in law was fishing with a worm and bobber, and caught two Golden Shiners, so I know at least a few have survived. I did not see any breaking the surface however.
Schools of fry around the dock, I'm assuming are FHM, but they could be YP. I had many ribbons from the YP spawn a while back, and have not see any fry from those.
I did see two very small painted turtles this weekend. About 2" diameter. Don't know if they moved in from somewhere else, or were hatched near by.
One larger 9"'painted turtle was laying eggs in our back yard. I noticed her angled upward out of a hole. Later inspection shows a mud covered flat spot in the yard. Not sure where she got the mud, as it hadn't rained recently.
It is fun watching this stuff..

9 yr old pond, 1 ac, 15' deep.
RES, YP, GS, FHM (no longer), HBG (going away), SMB, and HSB (only one seen in 5 yrs) Restocked HSB (2020) Have seen one of these.
I think that's about all I should put in my little pond.

Turtles are interesting critters. Sometimes when I'm fishing, one or two will come in close to shore and watch me. They always show up when I feed the fish.

The last two years I have had red ear slider turtle babies in my ponds. Females must lay the eggs near by. I have about four now from last year that are feed trained. Not intentionally on my part, but they are trained to come running when I feed the fish. If I see them I will throw some pellets their way and watch them take one or two. Sometimes the fish feeding near them are so aggressive they nearly turn the turtle upside down. Funny.

From what I have read they are not supposed to bother much. How many is too many I do not know, but the ponds I have seen that looked almost over run with turtles were very old ponds with lots of sediment and shallows. In other words kind of run down old ponds.

They also come and go. I have on occasion a very large red ear slider (big as I have seen them get, shell 10-12 inches front to back) that will be at the pond sometimes then moves on. Have seen it in the creek behind the pond also. Might a big female where my baby turtles are coming from. Point is, it does not stay in the pond year round. I have snappers do the same thing. They come, stay for a while, then leave. Once a huge soft shell turtle came and stayed for only a month or so. Would like to see it again. They are very reclusive.

They like old ponds with lots of weeds and sludge. Neighbors on both sides of me have old ponds with lots of turtles. I get an occasional visitor. I think they would only eat dead or dying fish or small minnows. They don't occupy the same habitat with most adult fish.

Speaking of turtles, I caught a snapper with a shell about 12" from front to back crawling out of the woods into a pond on a Plotwatcher game camera this Spring, and today walking to my pond found a redear slider that had a shell that was 6"-7" long and 4"-5" wide crawling through the grass towards the pond. I have no idea where it came from unless it was from the pond across the street, which is about 1/2 mile away. I saved it some exercise and put it at the edge of my pond.
