Not sure whats happening but we are getting a lime green colored film that acts like pollen would in the spring time. With the film on top of the water tiny air bubbles are forming. I have also started to notice a faint patroleum odor. We have had lots of rain for the past 4 months, and the pond has remained full. Any ideas what it is? Thanks

COuld be filamentous algae ( slimy). Or worse if you stick your hand in it and it comes up with hundreds of lime green grits it is watermeal. If so lots of monay to rid of. If algae easy to treat with proper copper appliction.

Thin green films of various shades of green on the surface are usually bluegreen algae blooms or sometimes it could be a group of algae called Euglena (Euglenoids). The films will often blow to the down wind side and there build up thicker films. Both algae types are indicative of over enrichment of nutrients. Lots of rains recently could have washed fertilizer into the pond and stimulated the growth of bluegreen algae. As Greg says copper based herbicides will kill most of the bloom but will do noting to abate the nutrients.
