Minnestota angler catches SD state record bass - The Daily Republic

Quote:
Held caught a 7-pound, 3-ounce smallie on Horseshoe Lake in northeast South Dakota near Webster, breaking the previous state record by three ounces.

The catch has not been announced by the state Game, Fish and Parks Department yet, but Held says the fish was weighed and certified and the information was notarized.

“It feels like a dream,” Held said Saturday night. “It just feels weird because we knew it was possible and then it happened.”

The fish, a female full of eggs, was 19 inches long and had a 19-inch girth.

“I’ve never seen anything so fat. It was so fat its eyes were bulging. It was a freak,” Held said.

cool

Quote:
Yes, they released the fish alive back into the lake. Which was a feat unto itself.

After getting the fish in the boat and realizing it was likely the state record, Held called a SDGFP biologist in Webster. They talked over the legality of transporting the fish to be weighed, certified and released.

They decided the best course of action was to drive to Webster, buy a large Rubbermaid container, fill it with water and put the fish in it. Held and Ehlert drove from the lake to Sportsmen’s Cove in Webster, weighed and certified the fish, then drove back to Horseshoe Lake for the release.

“It was a pretty cool experience, especially to see it swim away,” Held said. “It was three years of preparation. We’ve been working on this lake for three years and the stars aligned today.”

Beautiful fish! Timing of the catch was fortunate for sure. If caught a couple months from now after spawn, it would still be a great fish but I don't think it would have beat the record.

My buddy and I ice fished a lake just a couple miles from Horseshoe Lake last winter, and we both caught a SMB over 4lbs within a five minute span. Most anglers here in South Dakota seem to target WE or YP, so the SMB thrive under the low fishing pressure they receive. I wouldn't be surprised if that record is broken again within the next few years.

It didn't weigh as much as that one, but this is one that I caught in Northern Wi. Same size when caught, both length and girth. Cecil did the work - skin mount.

I've caught longer SMB than that on Lake Erie, but none that weight. Wow!

I need to drag my Champion up north for another smb fishing trip. A few yrs back I followed a highway along the gulf from New Orleans to Naples Fl. Fishing the gulf, by putting the boat in at a lot of boat ramps along the way. It was a great trip. Looks like I need to do the same on our Northern border, Bucket list addition smile

Yeah the question always remains though is did it survive. They have done that with very large LMB and they find them dead 2 days later..... Not sure if it's good or bad letting them go at that point but at least they have a shot at making it....
