Went to a new small lake and caught a pumpkinseed so colorful it could have been used as a aquarium fish. Question though..... the belly was so orange it was striking with the bright blue markings along its side, the gill spot had the distintive bright red markings. Could this fish be crossed with something else to make it so colorful. Thanks

Hey Rowly, that sounds fairly typical of the healthiest Pumpkinseed I catch around here. (The nice chunky ones seem to have more distinct colouration, espically near the end of summer start of spring in one are I fish here)

Pottsy and Cecil, thanks for your input and great pics but this pumpkinseed was truely something else, a truely marine colored fish. Maybe I should add a few to my gene poole. Thanks

Could this be a "golden redbreast" that has been discussed in the "Types of Fish to Choose" section?

Rowly - Did you keep the fish in question?

Sorvert and Potsy:
I think I live to far north for this subspecies of sunfish. No... I returned the pumpkinseed back to the water but in the future, it could be a start of a great gene poole in my tank. However, I what mostly bluegill as my forage base for the bass.
